Tutorial Questions for Equations, Functions and Graphs in Business
from 18th November to 6th December, 2024

QUESTION ONE
i) Determine which of the following equations are linear for x ,y and variables
1
a. x 2  2x 1  b. 2  x  c. x  42 y  9 d. 3yx+4x  7
x

ii) Formulate the equation and solve the following equation

a. John buys two bags of chips and three boxes of pizza for $5.13. He then buys another bag
of chips and two more boxes of pizza for $3.09. Find the cost of each bag of chips and each
box of pizza. (Use elimination method , substitution method)

b. A company invests 1500 in stock A and 2000 in stock B. the return on investment is 6% for
stock A and 8% for stock B. The total income earned from these investment if 160.How
much money is invested in each stock?

c. A manufacturer develops a formula to determine the demand for its product depending on
the price in Tsh. The formula is
𝐷 = 1800 + 120𝑃 − 4𝑃2

d. Where, 𝑃 the price per unit, and 𝐷 is the number of units in demand. At what price will
the demand drop to 600 units

e. Equation relating quantities demand (x) and price per unit (y) is given by y  600x  5000
i. Find the price per unity if quantities demanded are 3500 units
ii. Find quantities demanded if price per unit is Tshs.40/=

QUESTION TWO

a. Solve the following

1
i) -3x+ 8  6 ii) - 2 ≤ 3t-8 ≤ 10 iii) 2x+ 3 < 5 or 4x-7 > 9

b. A company manufactures two products: P and Q. Each product P requires 2 hours of

machine time and 3 hours of labor. Each product Q requires 4 hours of machine time and 2
hours of labor. The company has 100 hours of machine time and 120 hours of labor
available. The profit from selling each product P is $50, and the profit from selling each
product Q is $40.

Formulate a linear programming problem to maximize profit and determine how many units
of each product should be produced.

c. A nutritionist is preparing a diet plan using two foods, A and B. The nutritional content of
each food is as follows:

Food A: 2 grams of protein, 1 gram of fat, 3 grams of carbohydrates, costs $1 per unit.
Food B: 3 grams of protein, 2 grams of fat, 2 grams of carbohydrates, costs $2 per unit.
The daily requirements for a person are at least: 15 grams of protein, 8 grams of fat, 10
grams of carbohydrates. Formulate a linear programming model to minimize the cost
while meeting the nutritional requirements.
