GRID STRUCTURING

The overall goal of every designer is to communicate. Bottom line. Designers are faced with finding solutions to
visual and organizational problems—in short we are problem solvers. One approach to solving these problems is
the grid. While it may not be the only approach you might take, it is one with several important benefits.
Clarity/Order — Grids bring order to a layout making it easier for your audience to find and navigate
through information.
Efficiency — Grids allow designers to quickly add elements to a layout because many layout decisions are
addressed while building the grid structure.
Economy — Grids make it easier for other designers to work and collaborate on the design as they
provide a plan for where to place elements.
Consistency/Harmony — Grids lead to consistency in the layout of pages across a single site or even
several sites creating a structural harmony in the design.

Find five images of strong use of the grid and five examples of weak use of the grid.
Place your findings in a 7 page InDesign file—one page for a Cover (Grid Structures as the title and your name
included), one page for a Table of Contents and five pages to follow with each of said findings on each page (two
images on each page for side-by-side comparison). Each image found should have an accompanying brief
explanation as to why is works or not. Format is 11”x8.5”.

There are some typographic restraints:

All copy must be set in Garamond or Helvetica. The title, Grid Structures, should be set between 48–72 points,
Table of Contents header, 48–72 points. Table of Contents listing, 24 points. Your name, between 9-12 points.
Explanations will be 10 points. You may use various weights/styles (regular, bold, italic) as needed.
