Executive Summary
The 2015 Evans Data Corporation (EDC) Global Developer Population and
Demographics Report (Volume II) provides current, detailed, and comprehensive
data and analysis regarding software developer populations within specific regions
and developer market segments. This report combines EDC’s proprietary global
developer population modeling with selected current results of EDC’s semi-annual
global developer survey. This volume, published in the second half of each calendar
year, includes detailed developer population data regarding dynamic trends and
developer market segments and is updated to reflect changes in the activities and
perceptions of software developers.
Evans Data Corporation’s forecast model indicates that there are currently
20,149,100 developers worldwide, representing a 6.0% growth over last year’s 19
million. As predicted, the worldwide developer population broke 20 million this year,
driven primarily by rapid growth rates in APAC. The global developer population is on
course to reach and exceed the 25 million mark by 2020.
Among the four main regions covered in this report, this year—for the first
time—APAC bears the largest developer population with an estimated 7 million
developers. Marked and sustained growth in India and China are predicted to keep
APAC’s population the highest globally. EMEA follows closely with 6.9 million
developers. EMEA’s primary driver is Russia, which still has the largest developer
population in the region, despite now growing more slowly than in previous years.
North America has a total developer population of about 4.3 million; the vast
majority, 3.8 million, resides in the United States. The United States is forecast to
remain the country with the largest developer population for approximately the next
three years. However, India’s rapidly growing developer population is projected to
surpass that of the United States by 2019. Growth rates in North America are
comparatively lower than in other major regions such as APAC or Latin America, as
are Western Europe’s growth rates.
The release of Windows 10, in July 2015, has had a resounding impact
globally. Not only has Windows garnered in excess of 110 million users in the few
months since its release, developers have also flocked to Windows 10. This survey
saw a ~250% increase in the number of developers who primarily develop on the
Windows 10 platform.
The grown trends for mobile and cloud computing services have continued to
show steady growth since their respective inclusions in this study. Approximately
10.4 million developers are working on mobile applications, while 4.8 are developing
for the cloud. These represent 1% and 10% growth in each arena, respectively. On a
global scale, developers continue to use cloud services as part of their development
and deployment environments. This report reveals that currently 4.8 million
developers worldwide are using cloud services. Many millions more optimistically
plan on using cloud services as part of their development environment in the coming
months and years. Cloud computing offers the promise of inexpensive, flexible
infrastructure that can be created, dismantled, reconfigured, grown, and shrunk on
demand. Another technology that is increasingly related to the cloud is virtualization,
and over 8.6 million developers belong to organizations that employ virtualized
instances of hardware, software, or infrastructure assets
A majority of developers and the corporations that they work for are
publishing APIs for use by others. More than 7.6 million developers work within
corporations that provide externally facing APIs. Another 3.1 million developers
publish APIs; however they are exclusively distributed internally.
As APIs for mobile, cloud and other services have become more important for
developers, so too has membership in developer programs. More and more
developers have joined developer programs in recent years; more than 70% of
developers belong to a developer program in some capacity. This period saw a
sizable increase in the number of paid developer program memberships from just
over 6.7 million in the preceding period to just under 7 million currently. Coincident
with the increase in paid membership we see sizable decreases in the number of
individuals who are not members of developer communities at all. Developer
programs not only deliver the technical information that programmers seek, but they
also operate as communities where developers can get support from vendors and
where professionals writing code can learn from and interact with their peers.
Building a developer program around an API has become increasingly common and
as APIs are a principle means for companies to monetize their own development
efforts the noted increase in paid developer program memberships is perhaps
expected.
Methodology
The methodology used by Evans Data Corporation to establish the size and
composition of the developer population consists of several phases. EDC calculated
the actual population figures by using results from the Global Development Survey.
Data, filtered with respect to specific areas of interest and cross-tabbed with the four
regions North America; Asia-Pacific (APAC); Europe, the Middle East and Africa
(EMEA); and Latin America, and then combined with the current results yielded from
EDC’s propriety predictive model.
The first phase involves a lengthy, in-depth global research process where
current and historical data regarding key variables such as population, education,
technological growth, and economic development are gathered on a global, country-
by-country basis in each of Evans Data’s major geographical regions: North America;
Asia-Pacific (APAC); Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA); and Latin America,
and then vetted for accuracy and authenticity. The second phase of the process
involves the creation and calibration of a proprietary computer simulation model
used to establish the current developer population sizes and dynamics, as well as the
projection of future population growth rates. In the analysis phase, the results of the
research and modeling are assessed in light of further secondary research regarding
developer population expansion. And, lastly, the resultant outputs are synthesized
into a readily usable reporting format.
simulated outcome (in this case, the change in the developer population on a
country-by-country basis).
The complex structure of the predictive model can be summarized (in highly
simplified form) as follows: historical data for all variables are fed into the predictive
statistical model which ranks them proportionally according to their predictive power,
and assigns to them a proportional level of causal influence based on their
intercorrelations. Based on this data, the model assigns a developer population
number for the current period and establishes a forward growth rate based on
historical data and current trends. In this way, the model provides a robust
calculation of developer population growth for the largest and most economically
developed countries in each region across the globe. These numbers are then closely
scrutinized and vetted.
The next stage in the process focuses on the analysis of the outputs of Evans
Data’s proprietary predictive model. The initial focal point for this stage in the
calculation process is the comparison of each country within each region, and the
establishment of a ranking of the top countries by developer population. This
ranking provides a focal point for understanding, on a country-wise basis, which
countries are the most significant to a given region. Furthermore, this process serves
a practical purpose, since the top countries are shown to maintain the lion’s share of
the developer population. There is a key analytical step involved in this stage of the
process, which is to compare the number of developers in each country to the total
number of individuals in that country that have been educated on the tertiary level
(which is, in essence, what Americans consider the post-secondary or collegiate level
education).
For the first time in the history of this study, APAC’s developer population
surpasses that of EMEA. At its present growth rate, roughly 7.1% per year, APAC is
on course to reach 10 million developers by 2121. Though no longer the most
populous region with respect to developers, EMEA still boast a formidable developer
population which is projected to continue a fairly rapid growth in the coming years.
Growth in EMEA is driven primarily by Russia. The North American developer
population is approximately 4.3 million and is forecast to continue growing, albeit
slowly (in comparison with the other regions) in the coming years. Latin America,
with 1.8 million developers, is forecast to show an annual growth of between 3.6%
and 4.9% over the next six years.
Since the region was significantly impacted by the global recession some
years back, shifts in several of the key variables underlying the model and
consequently higher regional growth rates may indicate resurgence from that event.
An overall 6-year increase of 17% (over half a million individuals) in the North
American developer population will bring it to around 5 million in the year 2021.
Total North America 4,309.4 4,420.5 4,555.2 4,689.9 4,824.7 4,959.4 5,094.1
% Growth 2.6% 3.0% 3.0% 2.9% 2.8% 2.7%
The developer population for the region containing Europe, the Middle East,
and Africa (EMEA) is projected to grow at an annual rate of approximately 3.8%
percent for the next six years, growing from 6.9 million in 2015 to 8.7 million in
2021.
Russia, Germany, and the United Kingdom continue to represent the largest
national developer population markets within the region; however, it should be noted
that the rate of growth projected for Russia’s developer population is higher than
that of both Germany and the United Kingdom’s. Russia is forecast to have a
developer population greater than one million individuals by 2018.
It should also be pointed out that the more mature economies of Western
Europe—including Germany, the United Kingdom, and France—will, over the next 6
years, each have mean rates of growth within their developer populations of between
2.2% and 3.8%. Given that this rate of developer population growth is largely
consistent with the rates of growth projected for the United States and Canada,
these empirical data indicate that developer populations within developed countries
will experience slower growth over the next six years than developer populations
within emerging economies.
Note also the projected developer populations for the Nordic countries of
Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Norway. These countries were disaggregated from
their prior position within the “rest of EMEA” count last period. Each of these Nordic
countries contains a sizeable developer population, ranging from 228,000 in Sweden
to 155,000 in Norway.
Singapore, despite its small geographic area, is one of the four Asian Tiger
nations. It has been included in the report since the Spring 2013 publication and is
now distinct from the category tracking growth in “all other” APAC countries, as a lot
of software development is conducted in this country. Furthermore, internet
subscribers and the numbers of secure internet servers, as well as mobile phone
subscriptions, have increased tremendously in recent years. Singapore’s developer
population amounts to approximately 164,000 developers in 2015, and is projected
to grow about 6.7% each year over the next six years, to over 242,000 in 2020.
India and China remain two of the largest and fastest growing developer
populations worldwide. They are again the two leading countries in APAC in 2015,
with India accounting for 3.3 million developers and China with 1.2 million. Growth
rates for both countries are the highest worldwide, with China’s growth rates ranging
from 8.1% to 8.8% over the next six years.
Japan is the third largest developer population market in APAC, with 546,000
developers in 2015. However, like the mature economies in Western Europe and
North America, and in addition to a slow economic recovery, Japan’s growth is
expected to stay low relative to the region: around 2.5% over the next six years.
Total Latin America 1,817.6 1,906.3 1,983.5 2,060.6 2,137.6 2,214.7 2,291.8

Top Fifteen Countries’ Developer Population Summaries for 2015 and 2021
Through 2020, India, the United States, China, Russia, Japan, and Brazil are
expected to maintain their status as the countries with the largest developer
populations. This list includes the emerging BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and
China), which are growing at rates several times faster than the United States. This
dynamic suggests that the BRIC nations will come play a significant role as the place
of residence for a substantial proportion of the world’s developers, and that the
United States and Western Europe may come to have comparatively fewer of the
world’s programmers. Russia is projected to grow strongly over the next six years,
breaking the 1 million mark in 2015. However, it should be pointed out that the
United States remains the largest current developer population, and that India, even
with its rapid rate of developer population growth, is not projected to pass the United
States until 2018.
