Introduction
// LinkedIn is no more a resume.

It's no longer an alternative to naukri(dot)com. The way people

used to use LinkedIn has changed.

Over the years, LinkedIn has not only become a way to get hired or
find talent but to build a professional network and a personal brand.

Additionally, LinkedIn is also the place to build relationships with

customers and people within the same industry, showcase your
expertise and knowledge, generate more leads, and grow your
company’s brand.

The evolution has been fascinating to watch, and the social

platform now boasts over 756 million users in more than 200
countries.

Long gone are the days of just setting up a generic profile. Today,
you need to be more strategic and think about how you want
people to perceive you on the social network. Below is our guide to
optimizing your LinkedIn profile to be successful today and beyond.

LinkedIn profile optimization requires creativity, an ample

investment of time and research, and perhaps most importantly: the
education to know what and when to do things to help YOU stand
out in your industry.

01
In the last 5 years, the number of users has almost doubled on
LinkedIn. And as you can clearly see, from the last recession around
2009 v/s now, there's a huge difference.

COVID-19 pandemic made people realize how important it is to

have network and people around you to support you in terms of
your career when someone's facing difficult times.

As of now, in 2021, there are 178M users from the United States,
76M from India (that's 10% users of the entire platform), 53M from
Mainland China, and 49M from Brazil.

Imagine these numbers in 2025.

02
Why Profile Optimization?
// To be more visible & discoverable.

Having a great LinkedIn profile helps you attract recruiters'

attention when they're looking for new talent to join their
company's teams. Don't forget that 90% of recruiters use LinkedIn
on a regular basis!

However, LinkedIn is not only for job seekers. It's a great way to
position yourself as an expert in your industry or even as an
influencer!

More and more professionals use LinkedIn on a regular basis for

both professional and personal development.

Profile optimization can help you with:

✔ Getting more search appearances, therefore, be more

visible to potential customers or clients.
✔ Ultimately for salespeople and experts: You get more
clients.
✔ Getting more connection requests.

✔ People will see you as an expert because your profile is

professional looking and relevant

First Impressions
// Good first impression can do wonders.

What exactly is 'first impression' when it comes to LinkedIn?

Let's see what all someone see's when your profile or name pops up
in the search result.

Headline
Profile Picture

Location

Current Position

##1 Profile Picture

You don't need to go to a studio or get a DSLR to click a picture for
LinkedIn. But Instagram and Snapchat filters aren't acceptable.

Positive energy from your picture should flow like coke from a
bottle. (I wanted to write wine but I'm a teetotaler)

04
Here's a quick check of what should not be there on your profile
picture:

Dim lighting
Group picture
Low quality or blurry image
Full body shot

If you pass any of these checks, it's time to re-do your picture.

Quick examples of some of the best LinkedIn profile picture.

Ian Bremmer Doug McMillon Susan Wojcicki John Donahoe Gary Vaynerchuk
President at Eurasia President & CEO at CEO of YouTube President & CEO of Chairman of
Group Walmart Nike VaynerX

Just remember to keep it light, professional and creative.

#
#2 Your Headline

Writing a compelling headline takes a little skill and a lot of

creativity.

Headline is the easiest and quick way to get someone's attention.

If your headline sucks, people won't visit your profile - simple!

05
Let's quickly see what are some headlines that I personally like:

Let's start with this, my own profile.

Believe it or not, but 90% of my business comes from this headline.

Straight, simple, short, and to the point.

The one common thing in these headlines are they are to the point.

06
What makes a great headline?
How can you make your headline attractive enough?

This is your opportunity to really give your audience a summary of

why you're here and what you plan to accomplish.

98% of LinkedIn business professionals make the mistake of

creating a headline that sounds boring or just plain unoriginal.

Make sure you include in your headline the most relevant

keywords, as it makes you easier to find when looking for
professionals in your field of specialization in LinkedIn.

Some of the examples I personally like:

#1 Fastest Growing Company | CEO @ XYZ

I help early stage founders manage their team
Helping eCommerce Businesses Generate Leads
Marketing Manager at XYZ

Bonus
Try to summarize it in less than 70 characters so that it's visually
appealing and prospects can have a better idea about what you're
doing.

You got the point.

07
#
#3 Current Position

I've seen so many people dumping their experience, education,

certificates, and projects on LinkedIn. Don't do that mistake!

Don’t list all of your previous jobs, unless all of them are relevant to
your current situation. Instead, focus on the workplaces and
experiences that benefit you the most, and list your greatest
achievements and areas of focus.

Your current position matters when someone's searching for you or

for a keyword on LinkedIn.

Cover Picture
// You need a personalized cover.

There's a reason why LinkedIn asks you to upload a cover

picture - why do we leave it blank then?

The cover is potentially a place to showcase your interest or

to promote your work or business.

That simply means you shouldn't be using random, YES

RANDOM, images on your cover.

Few things you can consider while making a cover for

yourself:

Showing the audience interests you have and your

personality
Pitching and/or proving your credibility
Utilizing something in your line of work or industry

Make the best use of Canva - a super-duper tool for those

who don't know how to use traditional designing software.

Fun Fact: It won't take more than 10 minutes to get it done.

Go back to Page 06 to check some interesting cover

pictures! :)

09
About Section
// Express Yourself!

Your about section is a great place to have a Call to Action.

It might not seem like the place to call for action from your
audience at first glance, but when you really think about it, this
makes far more sense than just using posts or promoted content to
lead your audience in a specific direction.

You can encourage them to message you, visit your website, add a
leag magnet to collect emails - literally 'n' number of CTAs can be
there. Make the best use of it.

Your about section should ultimately be a closer look into the

elements of your headline. A sort of, "This is who I am, this is my
mission and this is what I can accomplish for YOU."

Bonus
It's good to have keywords in your about section, but don't stuff it forcefully.

Incorporating industry-relevant keywords into your profile can really give

your profile the boost it needs to get found on LinkedIn search and on
Google search results during relevant searches.

10
Bonus
For good measure, here are the character limits you need to keep in mind.

Profile Name: First Name: 20 characters, Last Name: 40 characters.

Profile Headline: 120 characters
Summary: 2,000 characters
Recommendations: 3,000 characters
Website URL: 256 characters

Remember,
a good overview of who you are
what you can do for potential clients
wether you are open to connecting or not
if you are a salesperson: contact information such as mail or
phone
a clear call to action

Now I'm 100% sure that you can write a powerful about section for
your LinkedIn profile.

11
Skills Section
// One of the most underrated sections.

If you go to Google and search for 'Skills' and 'Keyword', both

words are different. But somewhere, LinkedIn treats them equally.

Essentially, your skills are the keywords.

You are getting endorsed for keywords.

I'm assuming you don't want to rank for 'MS Office', 'Powerpoint',
or similar kinds of keywords - then why do we use such skills?

More is not more when it comes to LinkedIn Skills - it is better to

list fever skills and gain endorsements than to list a wide array of
different type of skills but have no one endorse them.

Make sure you update this section a few times a year as well -
whenever you learn a new skill or feel like a skill you have listed is
no longer relevant to your career interests, make changes
accordingly.

Initially, you can ask your mentors,

friends, manager, co-workers, etc.
to endorse you if they find you
skilled enough.

Don't be random about it, please!

12
New Features
Linkedin has been actively upgrading its platform. LinkedIn's looking
to help users share more of their personal story, and maximize their
on-platform presence.

#
#1 Video Cover Story

First off, LinkedIn's adding a new video cover story option, which
will enable users to add an introductory video that people can view
when they visit their LinkedIn listing.

The new tool will

enable job seekers
on the platform to
share a quick
video overview of
their skills and
experience.

Business owners
could optionally use the option to promote their products and
services via a quick intro clip.

You can share your expertise and why someone should follow you
if you're here to build your personal brand.

13
#
#2 Creator's Mode

LinkedIn recently launched the creator's mode. This will enable

users to showcase their on-platform activity and engagement in a
whole new way.

This is how LinkedIn explained it:

"At the heart of our ecosystem is our creator community. People love to
see creators give their take on what’s happening in the news or share
insights into a specific industry -- whether that’s a post, a video, an
article, or even a comment. If this is you, check out the new creator
mode in your Profile dashboard."

When the new 'Creator Mode' option is switched on, users will be
able to add a selection of hashtags to indicate what topics they post
about most on the platform, which will help LinkedIn showcase
them to interested audiences. Creator Mode will also move your

14
'Featured' and 'Activity' sections to the top of your Profile to more
prominently display the content you post, while your 'Connect'
button will update to 'Follow' instead, in order to help users build
an audience in the app.

Creator Mode will also put a bigger focus on your LinkedIn Live
broadcasts, further highlighting the content you share in-app.
"If you’re a LinkedIn Live broadcaster, your Profile background will
now show your Live broadcast when you start streaming, helping to
increase the visibility of your content."

The update is part of LinkedIn's increasing focus on content

creators on the platform.

In fact, in February 2021, LinkedIn posted a new job ad for a Head

of Community, focused on supporting LinkedIn creators around the
world, which will be part of a new team designed to establish new
opportunities and incentive programs to keep creators posting
updates.

Bonus
Remember this, 'every individual, every company, every business is a media
company.' If you're not promoting yourself, you're not losing but the one
who's doing it has better opportunities.

15
Conclusion
// One of the most underrated sections.

Doesn't matter who you are, doctor, teacher, engineer, student,

investor - LinkedIn is a goldmine for you. FOR ALL OF YOU!

A well-put-together and well-optimized LinkedIn profile will

significantly increase traction. It will drive viewers and engagement
to your profile, also will overall make it easier to reach your social
selling goals.

Yes, you'll have to spend a bit of time optimizing and updating your
profile and maintaining it for maximum benefit, but the benefits far
outweigh the costs.
