Session: Fall 2023

Semester: 5th
Objectives:
 To understand the operation of temperature Closed loop ON-OFF Control.
 To understand the effect of hysteresis on control system
 Familiarity with temperature control system

Equipment Used:
 Temperature control system
 DMM
 Connecting Wires

Circuit Diagram:

Fig 3. Circuit Diagram

Procedure:
1. Firstly, make a connection to the heater driver to heat up the water in process tank to
increase its temperature to required level.
2. Then make a connection according to the circuit diagram.
3. Now increases the voltage from Setpoint-1 to 5V and note down the rising time by using
stopwatch from 38 °C to 40 °C.
4. Now make a connection with condenser and turn on the water pump driver by increasing
the voltage from Setpoint-2. It will lower the temperature of water.
5. Then, note down the lowering time by using a stopwatch from 40 °C to 38 °C.
6. Now add some hysteresis to the ON-OFF controller and note down the rising and
lowering time.
7. Similarly, repeat the above process to note down the rising and lowering time for 8V
without and without hysteresis.

Observations and Calculations:

Results and Discussion:
This experiment was aimed at observing the effects of hysteresis in a temperature control
module. The setpoint voltage was provided which drove the heater and desired temperature was
achieved. Without hysteresis, the heater itself turned off when this temperature was achieved and
turned on when the temperature either dropped or rose above this temperature. When a little
hysteresis was introduced a rising and declining time was introduced in the system.

Safety Precautions:
1. Do not make loose connections.
2. Ensure proper connections of the set points.
3. Keep water and other liquids away from electrical equipment.
4. Always ensure that you turn off the equipment, before removing or adding any connections.
5. Don’t spill water out of the tank.
6. Behavior of electrical hazards.
7. Follow the recommended operating procedures and safety precautions provided by the
instructor.
