Notes-Introduction to 1.

5 – Evaluating Functions and Domain/Range

Vocabulary

• A relation can be represented by a set of _______________________________ .

• The domain is the set of all ______________________________ .

• The range is the set of all __________________________ .

• The independent variable is the same as the _____-values and the _____________________.

• The dependent variable is the same as the _____-values and the _____________________.

• A relation is a function if for each _____-value there is exactly __________ _____-value.

What is Function Notation?

The notation, f(x), is used as function notation.

You read f(x) as “f of x,” which means “the output value of the
function f for the input value x.”

Evaluating a Function

Example: The equation f(x) = 9 – 4x represents a function. Find f(2).

This f(2) means “what output do you get when you input 2”.

f(2) = 9 – 4(2)
f(2) = 9 – 8
f(2) = 1 When you input 2 into function f the output is 1.

Example 1: The function f(x) is defined by the table below. Evaluate the following:

a) f(-2) = ______________ b) f(1) = ________________

c) f(x) = 8, x = ____________ c) f(x) = -2, x = ____________

Example 2: The function f(x) is defined by the graph below. Evaluate the following:

a) f(0) = __________ b) f(-6) = __________

c) f(x) = 2 ___________ d) f(6) = __________

d) f(x) = -4 ___________ f) f(x) = -7 __________

Example 3: Evaluate the following using the functions below. Show all work.
12
f(x) = −x2 + 7 g(x) = −3x − 1 h(x) = j(x) = 2x + 9
x

a) g(-10) b) h(3) c) f(-4) d) j(x) = 23

Domain and Range

We discussed what the domain and range of a relation is at the beginning of these notes. Now, let’s make
sure you can describe the domain and range from a graph.

Example 4: State the domain and range of each relation.

a) b) c)

d) e) f)
