File Types Activity
Groups of two students (Each student will have its own copy to attached it to his/her binder)
Succes Criteria:
To learn about common file types used for images, audio, video, documents, and spreadsheets.
Materials:
IGCSE BINDER
Procedure:
o Learn how to identify file types based on their extensions (e.g., .jpg, .mp3, .docx).
o Explore online tools and software that can be used to create/edit these files.
Activity:
1. Explain the main features and differences between each Image File Types: JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, PSD
2. Explain the main features and differences between each Audio File Types: MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, OGG
3. Explain the main features and differences between each Video File Types: MP4, AVI, MOV, MKV, WMV
4. Explain the main features and differences between each Document File Types: DOCX, PDF, ODT, RTF, TXT
5. Explain the main features and differences between each Spreadsheet File Types: XLSX, CSV, ODS, XLS, XLSM
6. Create a table to summarize common file extensions, their corresponding file types, and the programs you can
use to create/edit these types of files. (Use the template provided in page 2)
By completing this self-study activity, you will gain a solid understanding of common file types and their uses. This
knowledge will be helpful as preparation towards the IGCSE Computer Science exam.
