6G5Z0020 Assignment Brief
6G5Z0020 Assignment Brief
Type: Individual
Note: it is your responsibility to make sure that your work is complete and available for marking by the
deadline. Make sure that you have followed the submission instructions carefully, and your work is
submitted in the correct format, using the correct hand-in mechanism (e.g., Moodle upload). If
submitting via Moodle, you are advised to check your work after upload, to make sure it has uploaded
properly. If submitting via OneDrive, ensure that your tutors have access to the work. Do not alter your
work after the deadline. You should make at least one full backup copy of your work.

Assessment Mi4ga4on
If there is a valid reason why you are unable to submit your assessment by the deadline you may apply for
Assessment Mitigation. There are two types of mitigation you can apply for via the module area on
Moodle (in the ‘Assessments’ block on the right-hand side of the page):
• Non-evidenced extension: does not require you to submit evidence. It allows you to add a short
extension to a deadline. This is not available for event-based assessments such as in-class tests,
presentations, interviews, etc. You can apply for this extension during the assessment weeks, and
the request must be made before the submission deadline. For this assessment, the non-evidenced
extension is 2 days.
• Evidenced extension: requires you to provide independent evidence of a situation which has
impacted you. Allows you to apply for a longer extension and is available for event-based assessment
such as in-class test, presentations, interviews, etc. For event-based assessments, the normal
outcome is that the assessment will be deferred to the summer reassessment period.
Further information about Assessment Mitigation is available on the dedicated Assessments page.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the unacknowledged representation of another person’s work, or use of their ideas, as
one’s own. Manchester Metropolitan University takes care to detect plagiarism, employs plagiarism
detection software, and imposes severe penalties, as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct and
Academic Misconduct Policy. Poor referencing or submitting the wrong assignment may still be treated
as plagiarism. If in doubt, seek advice from your tutor.
As part of a plagiarism check, you may be asked to attend a meeting with the Module Leader, or
another member of the module delivery team, where you will be asked to explain your work (e.g.
explain the code in a programming assignment). If you are called to one of these meetings, it is very
important that you attend.
Use of genera4ve AI
The use of generative AI is permitted in this assessment, so long as it is used in accordance with the
instructions provided in the ‘Are you allowed to use AI in assessments?’ section of the AI Literacy Rise
Study Pack. All submitted work must be your own original content.
2
• You can use AI to suggest tests to verify connectivity and correct network configuration Use AI
suggestions as a guide but develop your testing scenarios independently, ensuring you
understand each part of the testing.
• You may use AI to generate command templates for basic network configuration tasks, but you
are required to modify, annotate, and fully understand all generated commands. The final
connectivity testing scenarios must be your own, and you must clearly explain their functions.
For Task 3 (Video demonstration)
• You can use AI to help script parts of your video demonstration, such as summarising technical
concepts or structuring the video presentation, but ensure your script reflects your own
understanding.
For any other uses of generative AI, you should also follow the instructions in the ‘Are you allowed to use
AI in assessments?’ section of the AI Literacy Rise Study Pack or speak to your tutor. All submitted work
must be your own original content.

Forma+ve feedback will be provided verbally during the assessment
support labs in Weeks 10 and 11. You are encouraged to commence
your network design tasks early to share your work during those
sessions for discussion and feedback.
Forma7ve Feedback:
Addi+onal support will be provided by the unit staff during their
published office hours (refer to Moodle). Please request an
appointment by email ([email protected];
[email protected]; [email protected]).
You will receive wriLen feedback through Moodle Turni+n within 20
working days of submiNng your work. The feedback will be a
general comment covering your piece of work, and an indica+on of
Summa7ve Feedback:
the quality of your work on each row of the assessment grid below.
There will also be general feedback to all students studying the unit.
1. Introduc,on
The unit is 100% coursework-based and has a single component (1CWK100), weighted at 100% of the unit
marks.
In summary:
- Task 1: You will plan, design and configure a network consis+ng of PCs, routers, switches and servers.
- Task 2: You will conduct a connec+vity test among the devices in your designed network.
- Task 3: You will write a report detailing your network plan, configura+ons and connec+vity tests.
For this assessment, you are required to plan, design and configure a medium-level network for a hypothe+cal
client of choice. This client has approximately 50 numbers of employees in two ci+es, London and Manchester.
Each city has two offices with 10 open-plan office cubicles (20 office desks in each loca+on). Each of the offices
requires both wired and wireless connec+vity for the networking devices on each desk. Your task is to plan and
design the layout of the networking devices, configure your devices and test connec+vity among your networking
devices. You are required to write a 1500-word report detailing your network design tasks. Your network design
and report must contain the following:
- A figure of the en+re layout of the network plan showing all the networking devices.
- The CIDR IP addressing scheme u+lised to determine the IP addresses for the networking devices.
- A password and SSH configura+on details on your routers.
- Screenshots and figures of the configura+on details of a representa+ve sample for your networking
devices such as a router, PC, and server in each of the ci+es. You may include your configura+on lis+ng
as an appendix.
Addi+onally, you need to submit a screen recording video (2 – 3 minutes) showing your network configura+on
tests to:
- Demonstrate at least 2 connec+vity tests which must include at least two routers and two PCs in
different ci+es communica+ng.
- Demonstrate and verify RIP and DHCP configura+ons where appropriate.
Guidance on using Kaltura Capture and PowerPoint to record a presenta+on can be viewed here.

Your lectures will cover the underlying principles of computer networks and your lab will cover the prac+cal
aspects of using both soaware (Cisco packet tracer) and hardware (Cisco routers and switches). It is your
responsibility to decide which of the plaborms (hardware or soaware) to use for your assessment. If hardware,
please inform your lab tutors as soon as possible to make the necessary arrangements.
You must use the following template to structure your report (some minor modifica+ons to suit the flow of
your write-up are allowed):
- Title
- Abstract
- Introduc+on
- Aim and Objec+ves
- Network Design o Network plan o Network configura+ons
- Network Evalua+on and Discussion
- Conclusion
- References
- Appendix, if applicable.
A docx template and a similar sample report will be available in Moodle. One of the assessment support lab
sessions will cover academic report wri+ng to support your assessment.
3. The Submission
Report submission
To complete your submission, you must submit an individual report of 1500 +/- 10% words and a video
demonstra>on through Moodle submission inbox, as a single PDF file. In addi>on, please use the following naming
structure for your report before uploading it to Moodle (“lastname-firstname-studentID.pdf”)
Video submission
• If submiNng a video file, click on the Kaltura icon in the text editor. This will open the Kaltura Media
Gallery. Upload/select your video and then embed it.
• Please see the Video guide on how to submit your Video Assignment in our Assessment Advice &
Support sec+on on the Student Resource area.
