CONSERVATION OF PLANTS & ANIMALS
Ans: Urbanization and Industrialization have led to a large scale deforestation as humans cut
trees and flatten the land for making and building settlements. They also cut the trees for
making resources out of the tree’s wood, wood pulp, roots, leaves etc.

2. A new species ‘X’ is introduced in a forest. How is it likely to affect the local species of the
area?
Ans: The new species ‘X’ can have a significant impact on the species of that area. The new
species may prey on or compete for resources with the local species.
It is created to promote and demonstrate a balanced relationship between man and the
biosphere.

Ans: The Red Data Book helps in protecting biodiversity as it provides useful information on
the threat status of different organisms.

5. Why do some birds and animals migrate?

6. How do birds ‘get helped’ in navigation while undertaking long distance flights?
Ans: While undertaking long distance flights, the birds get helped in the following ways-
* They have sharper eyesight & better visual memory of ground clues.
*They navigate with the help of Sun & stars, in combination with a reading of the Earth’s
magnetic field.
*They have an inbuilt magnetic compass, which is a tiny mass of tissue, between the eye
and the brain.

7. Distinguish between a National Park & a Wildlife Sanctuary.
*It also called a wildlife refuge, is a generally official territory, marked by the
government.
*It provides protection and suitable living conditions for wild animals.
*Hunting, killing or capturing of animals is strictly prohibited here.
*Ex – Jayakwadi Bird Sanctuary, Gahirmatha Turtle Sanctuary
2. ‘Extinction of tiger can destabilize the entire forest ecosystem and result in a large scale loss
of biodiversity’.
Ans: Each and every plant and animal is essential for the survival of the ecosystem. Changes in
the biodiversity of a place, change its ecosystem.
Tiger is a carnivore and kills other animals for its survival. If it becomes extinct, the deer
and cow population will thrive and increase in number. Such a large number of herbivores will
graze on the green cover and in due course there will be no plants. Without the plants, to hold
the soil in place, the land becomes prone to soil erosion.

3. Why are endemic species at a greater risk of becoming extinct? List the ‘human action
related causes’ that are responsible for their extinction?
Ans: The endemic species are at a greater risk of becoming extinct as they are found in a
particular geographic location, such as a specified island, habitat, nation and nowhere else.
* Loss of habitat
* Introduced species
* Overexploitation
* Ecosystem disruption
Ans: The growing human population poses a grave threat to biodiversity because increasing
population against the limited resources are not sufficient for the survival and development of
the mankind.
6. List five ways in which you, as an individual, can contribute to conserving forests and
wildlife.
