CONSERVATION OF PLANTS & ANIMALS

D. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS IN BRIEF.

1. How have ‘urbanization and industrialization’ led to a large scale deforestation?

Ans: Urbanization and Industrialization have led to a large scale deforestation as humans cut
trees and flatten the land for making and building settlements. They also cut the trees for
making resources out of the tree’s wood, wood pulp, roots, leaves etc.

2. A new species ‘X’ is introduced in a forest. How is it likely to affect the local species of the
area?

Ans: The new species ‘X’ can have a significant impact on the species of that area. The new
species may prey on or compete for resources with the local species.

3. What is a Biosphere Reserve? Name two Biosphere Reserves in India.

Ans: A Biosphere Reserve is an international conservation designation given by the UNESCO

(United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) under its programme on
Man and the Biosphere.

It is created to promote and demonstrate a balanced relationship between man and the
biosphere.

Two examples are-

 Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve

 Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve

4. How does the Red Data Book Help in protecting biodiversity?

Ans: The Red Data Book helps in protecting biodiversity as it provides useful information on
the threat status of different organisms.

5. Why do some birds and animals migrate?

Ans: Some birds and animals migrate to find

 Abundant food, and

 A favourable place to breed.

6. How do birds ‘get helped’ in navigation while undertaking long distance flights?

Ans: While undertaking long distance flights, the birds get helped in the following ways-
* They have sharper eyesight & better visual memory of ground clues.
*They navigate with the help of Sun & stars, in combination with a reading of the Earth’s
magnetic field.
*They have an inbuilt magnetic compass, which is a tiny mass of tissue, between the eye
and the brain.

7. Distinguish between a National Park & a Wildlife Sanctuary.

Ans : National Park –

*It is a reserve of land, declared and owned by the national government.

*It helps in conservation of endangered species of animals as well as plants.
*It is protected from most human development works and pollution.
*Ex – Kaziranga National Park, Bandipur National Park (BNP)
Wildlife Sanctuary –

*It also called a wildlife refuge, is a generally official territory, marked by the
government.
*It provides protection and suitable living conditions for wild animals.
*Hunting, killing or capturing of animals is strictly prohibited here.
*Ex – Jayakwadi Bird Sanctuary, Gahirmatha Turtle Sanctuary

E. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS.

1. Explain how deforestation can result in droughts and floods.

Ans: Floods – Deforestation results in flooding as

*There is a lack of trees that bind the soil and absorb water.
*The deposition of soil in river bed decreases the depth of rivers.
Droughts – Deforestation results in droughts as –
*Fewer trees means, more carbon dioxide which disturbs the water cycle.
*There is decreased rainfall.

2. ‘Extinction of tiger can destabilize the entire forest ecosystem and result in a large scale loss
of biodiversity’.

Justify this statement.

Ans: Each and every plant and animal is essential for the survival of the ecosystem. Changes in
the biodiversity of a place, change its ecosystem.

Tiger is a carnivore and kills other animals for its survival. If it becomes extinct, the deer
and cow population will thrive and increase in number. Such a large number of herbivores will
graze on the green cover and in due course there will be no plants. Without the plants, to hold
the soil in place, the land becomes prone to soil erosion.

3. Why are endemic species at a greater risk of becoming extinct? List the ‘human action
related causes’ that are responsible for their extinction?

Ans: The endemic species are at a greater risk of becoming extinct as they are found in a
particular geographic location, such as a specified island, habitat, nation and nowhere else.

The causes related to their extinction are –

* Loss of habitat
* Introduced species
* Overexploitation
* Ecosystem disruption

4. ‘The growing human population poses a grave threat to biodiversity’.

Justify this statement.

Ans: The growing human population poses a grave threat to biodiversity because increasing
population against the limited resources are not sufficient for the survival and development of
the mankind.

When population increases, industrialization also increases, which ultimately leads to

deforestation and affects the biodiversity.

5. Explain the difference between extinct, endangered and vulnerable species.

Ans: Extinct species – When no member of a species exists, or is presumed, beyond

reasonable doubt, to have disappeared, such a species is known as an extinct species.
Ex – Dodo, Passenger Pigeon
Endangered species – When a species faces a very high risk of extinction in the near
future, it is termed as endangered species.
Ex – Blue whale, Giant panda
Vulnerable species – The species, which faces a high risk of extinction in the
medium-term is termed as vulnerable species.
Ex – Cheetah, Sloth bear

6. List five ways in which you, as an individual, can contribute to conserving forests and
wildlife.

Ans: Five ways are as follows –

*Spreading awareness to save wildlife.
*By extensive afforestation practices.
*By contributing financially to raise resources to support conservation.
*Being against hunting.
*By stopping the use of products obtained from wild birds and animals.
