Question 1: Marks = 05

Consider two forces P and Q act at an angle of 1200. The bigger force is of 40N and the resultant is perpendicular to the smaller one. Find the
smaller force.

Solution:

By given statement forces P and Q are making angleθ= 120 degree. Resultant force R is making angle 90 degree with small force Q as these
forces are perpendicular with each other so.

Angle α that resultant force is making with force P is found as

120°-=90°+ α

120°-90°= α

α=30°

In given parallelogram using law of tangent

It is clear that small force Q is of 20N.


Question 2: Marks = 15
Consider the forces 20N, 25N, 30N and 35N as shown in the following figure.
Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant force.

Solution:
Since all these forces are concurrent and coplanar. Each of one can be resolved into its horizontal and vertical component. Thus
resultant horizontal component of all forces will be.

Similarly y component of resultant force can be obtained by adding vertical components of all forces.
