Part 1 - DC Machine

Task 1.1 Armature Speed Control of DC Motor

1. Create the Circuit:
o Use MATLAB Simulink to create a speed control circuit for a DC
motor.
o Select a DC machine block from those available in MATLAB.
2. Set Parameters:
o Apply an armature voltage of 240V and a field voltage of 300V.
3. Simulate and Plot:
o For armature resistances R1 of 10Ω, 20Ω, and 30Ω, plot the
speed curve for each value.
o Observe and describe any variations in the speed curves with
increasing armature resistance and provide an explanation.
4. Theoretical Explanation:
o Explain the effect of changes in armature resistance on speed

based on the DC motor speed formula

Task 1.2 Field Speed Control of a DC Motor
1. Create the Circuit:
o Use MATLAB Simulink to create a field control speed control
circuit for a DC motor.
2. Set Parameters:
o Apply an armature voltage of 240V and a field voltage of 300V.
o Add an external resistance R2=5Ω in the circuit.
3. Simulate and Plot:
o Vary the armature resistance to R2=10Ω, R1=15Ω, and observe
the effects, plotting the speed variations.
Task 1.3 Speed / Torque Characteristics of the DC Motor
1. Set Experimental Conditions:
o Connect the field circuit to a fixed 220V DC output voltage.
o Connect the armature circuit to a variable DC output voltage.
2. Simulate and Record:
o Increase the armature voltage until the motor speed is about
2300 rpm without exceeding 220V DC.
o Maintain the armature voltage as constant as possible
throughout the experiment, apply torque from the minimum to
0.9 Nm in steps of 0.1 Nm, and record the values.
3. Calculate and Plot:
o Calculate the input power, output power, and efficiency, and
complete Table 1.3.
o Plot the graphs of speed, armature current, and efficiency vs.
torque.
Part 2 - Induction Motors
Task 2.1 No-load Test of Three-phase Induction Motor
1. Create the Circuit:
o Build the circuit using the Simulink block toolbox as shown in
Figure 2.3.
2. Set Parameters:
o Select a squirrel-cage induction motor; select the 5.4 HP (4KW),
400V, 50Hz, 1430 RPM, and supply voltage phase-to-phase
voltage (Vrms); 400V, 50Hz.
3. Set Mechanical Input:
o Set the mechanical input as Torque-Tm in the induction motor
Simulink block.
o Set the reference torque to zero.
Task 2.2 Blocked Rotor Test of Induction Motor
1. Create the Circuit:
o Build the circuit using the Simulink block toolbox as shown in
Figure 2.2.
2. Set Parameters:
o Select a squirrel-cage induction motor; select the 5.4 HP (4KW),
400V, 50Hz, 1430 RPM, and supply voltage phase-to-phase
voltage (Vrms); 400V, 50Hz.
3. Set Mechanical Input:
o Set the mechanical input as Torque-Tm in the induction motor
Simulink block.
o Set the reference speed to zero.
