Research Methodology

Research Design

When a research is carried-out, it follows a definite pattern or pan of action throughout the
procedure, i.e since the problem identification to report preparation & presentation. This
definite pattern or plan of action is called “Research Design”. It is a map that guides the
researcher in collecting & analyzing the data. In other words, research design acts as a blueprint
that is followed throughout the research work.

Definition:
According to William Zikmund, “Research design is defined as a master plan specifying
the methods & procedures for collecting & analyzing the needed information.”

According to Kerlinger,“ Research design is the plan, structure & strategy of

investigation conceived so as to obtain answers to research questions & to control
variance.” (Aditi Anant Kale, 2016)

Types of Research Design

Basically, there are three types of research design as shown below

Exploratory
Research
Design

Descriptive
Research
Design

Experimental Research
Design

Definition and Purpose

An exploratory design is conducted about a research problem when there are few or no earlier
studies to refer to. The focus is on gaining insights and familiarity for later investigation or
undertaken when problems are in a preliminary stage of investigation.

3
The goals of exploratory research are intended to produce the following possible insights:

 Familiarity with basic details, settings and concerns.

 Well grounded picture of the situation being developed.
 Generation of new ideas and assumption, development of tentative theories or
hypotheses.
 Determination about whether a study is feasible in the future.
 Issues get refined for more systematic investigation and formulation of new research
questions.
 Direction for future research and techniques get developed.

Descriptive Research

Definition

Sometimes an individual wants to know something about a group of people. Maybe the individual
is a would-be senator and wants to know who they're representing or a surveyor who is looking to
see if there is a need for a mental health program.

Descriptive research is a study designed to depict the participants in an accurate way. More simply
put, descriptive research is all about describing people who take part in the study.
There are three ways a researcher can go about doing a descriptive research project, and they are:

Observational, defined as a method of viewing and recording the participants Case study, defined
as an in-depth study of an individual or group of individuals

Survey, defined as a brief interview or discussion with an individual about a specific topic

Let's look at specific ways we can use each of these.

Observational
If I say, 'chimpanzees,' what do you think? Okay, after you think of bananas. Okay, after you
remember that their babies are adorable. Yes! Jane Goodall - the researcher who spent years
observing chimpanzees in the wild.

4
Observational studies are all about watching people, and they come in two flavors. Naturalistic,
also known as field observation, is a study where a researcher observes the subject in its natural
environment. This is basically what Jane Goodall did; she observed the chimpanzees in their
natural environment and drew conclusions from this. This makes the observations more true to
what happens in the chaotic, natural world. But, it also means you have less control over what
happens.

The other flavor is laboratory observation, where a researcher observes the subject in a laboratory
setting. This gives the researcher a little more control over what happens so they don't have to fly
out to some tiny little island in the middle of a war zone to observe something. However, it does
ruin some of the naturalness that one might get from field observation. An example of a laboratory
observation in psychology would be done to understand something about children at a certain age,
such as the process of how a child learns to speak and mimic sounds.

Experimental Research Design –

A blueprint of the procedure that enables the researcher to test his hypothesis by reaching
valid conclusions about relationships between independent and dependent variables. It
refers to the conceptual framework within which the experiment is conducted. An
experiment deliberatelyimposes a treatment on a group of objects or subjects in the interest
of observing the response. This differs from an observational study, which involves
collecting and analyzing data without changing existing conditions. Because the validity of
a experiment is directly affected by its construction and execution, attention to experimental
design is extremely important.

Treatment

In experiments, a treatment is something that researchers administer to experimental units. For

example, a corn field is divided into four, each part is 'treated' with a different fertilizer to see
which produces the most corn; a teacher practices different teaching methods on different groups
in her class to see which yields the best results; a doctor treats a patient with a skin condition with
different creams to see which is most effective. Treatments are administered to experimental units
by 'level', where level implies amount or magnitude. For example, if the experimental units were
given 5mg, 10mg, 15mg of a medication, those amounts would be three levels of the treatment.
(Research Guide, 2010)

5
Research Design: In this project, Descriptive Research Design has been used to demonstrate the

problem faced by AYS, Pune

Sample Size: Among the whole population only 120 vendors have been taken as a sample size
and they are divided into three categories on the basis of their size as shown below-

Size of the Vendor Number of

Vendor

Large Vendor 24

Medium Vendor 36

Small vendor 60

Total 120

Sampling Method: Stratified Random Sampling which is a probability sampling has been used
in this project. In this sampling method the entire sample size are divided into some stratum and
then taken a unit randomly and like this way entire samples have been tasted.

Data Collection: Both Primary & Secondary Data collection methods are used to collect the
actual as well as the relevant data. For Primary data collection questionnaires, personal interview
has been used and for secondary data collection various marketing books, newspapers (Business
Standard, Economics Times) and Internet is used.

CHAPTER-2
CONCEPTUAL BACKGROUND

7
Conceptual Background

Service Industry in India

Maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) involves fixing any sort of mechanical, plumbing, or
electrical device should it become out of order or broken (known as repair, unscheduled, casualty
or corrective maintenance). In the aircraft maintenance market sector, maintenance, repair and
overhaul (MRO) services also include inspection, rebuilding, alteration and the supply of spare
parts, accessories, raw materials, adhesives, sealants, coatings and consumables for aircraft
manufacturing and MRO.

In all sectors, effective MRO involves performing routine actions which keep devices,
equipment, machinery, building infrastructure and supporting utilities in working order (known
as scheduled maintenance) and prevent trouble from arising (preventive maintenance).

The marine transportation, offshore structures, industrial plant/equipment and commercial

facilities market sectors depend on scheduled or preventive paint maintenance programmes to
maintain and restore coatings applied to steel, and also concrete and masonry assets in
environments subject to attack from erosion, corrosion and environmental pollution.

MRO can be categorized by whether the product remains the property of the customer (i.e. a
service is being offered), or whether the product is bought by the reprocessing organization and
sold to any customer wishing to make the purchase (Gazette, 2002). In the former case it may
be a back shop operation within a larger organization or smaller operation.

The former of these represents a closed loop supply chain and usually has the scope of
maintenance, repair, or overhaul. The latter of the categorizations is an open loop supply chain
and is typified by refurbishment and remanufacture. The main characteristic of the closed loop
system is that the demand for a product is matched with the supply of a used product. Neglecting
asset write-offs and exceptional activities the total population of the product between the customer
and the service provider remains constant. (Our Value, 2017)

Market Size
The services sector is the key driver of India‟s economic growth. The Nikkei India Service
Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose to 52.2 in May 2017. The sector contributed around 66.1
per cent of its Gross Value Added growth in 2015-16, thereby becoming an important net foreign
exchange earner and the most attractive sector for FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) inflows.

8
The Central Statistics Office‟s (CSO) provisional estimates of Gross Value Added (GVA) in FY
2016-17 (PE) indicate that the service sector grew 7.74 per cent year-on-year to Rs 21.43 trillion
(US$ 332.74 billion)
According to a report called „The India Opportunity‟ by leading research firm Market Research
Store, the Indian mobile services market is expected to reach $37 billion in 2017 and grow by
10.3 per cent year-on-year to reach US$ 103.9 billion by 2020.
The Indian digital classifieds industry is expected to grow three-fold to reach US$ 1.2 billion by
2020, driven by growth in horizontal classifieds like online services, real estate and automobiles.
Out of overall services sector, the sub-sector comprising financial services, real estate and
professional services contributed US$ 305.8 billion or 20.5 per cent to the GDP. The sub-sector
of community, social and personal services contributed US$ 188.2 billion or 12.6 per cent to the
GDP.
Investments
The Indian services sector which includes financial, banking, insurance, non-financial/business,
outsourcing, research and development, courier and technical test analysis, has attracted FDI
equity inflows in the period April 2000-March 2017, amounting to about US$ 59.47 billion
which is about 17.92 per cent of the total foreign inflows, according to the Department of
Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).
Some of the developments and major investments by companies in the services sector in the
recent past are as follows:

MPaani Solutions Pvt. Ltd, a consumer and retailer data analytics start-up, has raised US$
1.35 million in a pre-series A funding round led by IDG Ventures with the aim of
deploying capital for scaling technology and data science functions along with spending

on marketing and sales.

FM Logistic Asia, outlined plans of investing around EUR 50 million (US$ 56.14
million) in India in the next four years, to contribute to a better efficiency of
logistics market in the country.

Caisse de Dépôt et Placement du Québec (CDPQ), Canada‟s second largest pension
fund, plans to invest around US$ 155 million to acquire a minority stake in TVS
Logistics Services Limited, a privately held subsidiary of the TVS Group.

WNS Global Services has made an announcement to acquire Denali Sourcing Services for
US$ 40 million, with the aim of improving its sourcing and procurement capabilities.

9

Samsung India has expanded its service network to over 6,000 talukas across 29 states
and seven union territories in India, by introducing over 535 service vans equipped with
engineers, key components, diesel generator (DG) sets and key equipment, for providing

quick response and on-spot resolution.

Uber Technologies Inc plans to launch UberEATS, its food delivery service to India,
with investments made across multiple cities and regions, as per Mr Allen Penn, Head,
Asia-Pacific, UberEATS.

International Finance Corporation (IFC), the investment arm of World Bank, plans
to invest around US$ 10 million Bengaluru-based online freight-booking service
provider Zinka Logistics, which will be used to expand Zinka's service offerings and

further technology development.

Reliance JioInfocomm Ltd. and Uber have announced a strategic partnership, which will
enable Uber riders to pay for their rides using JioMoney.

The domestic and foreign logistic companies are optimistic about prospects in
the logistics sector in India, and are actively making investments plans to
improve earnings and streamline operations.
Government Initiatives
The Government of India recognises the importance of promoting growth in services sectors
and provides several incentives in wide variety of sectors such as health care, tourism,
education, engineering, communications, transportation, information technology, banking,
finance, management, among others.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that India's priority will be to work towards trade
facilitation agreement (TFA) for services, which is expected to help in the smooth
movement of professionals.
The Government of India has adopted a few initiatives in the recent past. Some of these
are as follows:

Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India, launched 'DigiYatra', a digital platform
for air travellers that aims to develop a digital ecosystem providing consistent service and
a delightful experience at every touch point of the journey.

Mr Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways and Shipping, Government of
India, launched INAM-Pro's upgraded version, INAM-Pro +, an online platform to

10
bring together buyers and sellers of construction materials, equipment/machinery and
services.

The Indian service sector is expected to facilitate a knowledge based economy, and
the manufacturing sector will be dominated by services as a result of servicification
of manufacturing, said Ms Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of Commerce and Industry,

Government of India.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has launched a services
portal, which aims to provide seamless access to government services related to
education, health, electricity, water and local services, justice and law, pensions

and benefits, through a single window.

Road Ahead
Services sector growth is governed by both domestic and global factors. The Indian facilities
management market is expected to grow at 17 per cent CAGR between 2015 and 2020 and surpass
the $19 billion mark supported by booming real estate, retail, and hospitality sectors. The
performance of trade, hotels and restaurants, and transport, storage and communication sectors are
expected to improve in FY17. The financing, insurance, real estate, and business services sectors
are also expected to continue their good run in FY17.
The implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) would create a common national
market and reduce the overall tax burden on goods. It is expected to reduce costs in the long run
on account of availability of GST input credit, which will result in the reduction in prices of
services. (IBEF, 2010)
