OPERATIONS and PARTS MANUAL
VANOIL 4 1/16" - 10K SIDE DOOR STRIPPER/PACKER
MAN M406SS00, REV. 14

1. General Description:

Vanoil’s 4 1/16-10K side door stripper/packer assembly is designed to pack off on coil tubing as it is being
stripped in or out of the well, at working pressures up to 10,000 psi. It also allows the replacement of packing
elements, non-extrusion rings, and primary seals while the tubing is still in the well.

2. Technical Data:

Working Pressure or Well Pressure: 10,000 psi maximum

Hydraulic Pressure: 5,000 psi maximum*
Operating Temperature: -20 Deg. F to 250 Deg. F.
Stroke Length of Packer Cylinder Sleeve: 11.18"
Hydraulic Fluid Volume to Extend: 553 cu.in. or 9.1 liters.
Hydraulic Fluid Volume to Retract: 154 cu.in. or 2.5 liters.
Tubing Sizes: 1 1/4", 1 1/2”, 1 3/4”, 2", 2 3/8", 2 5/8", 2 7/8"
Service: H2S.
NOTE: The calculated hydraulic pressure (see Table
1.0) is the pressure required to overcome the
force of the well pressure. A slight additional
hydraulic pressure will be required to compress
the packer.

3. Assembly Drawing and Bill of Material:

See Drawing No’s. M406SS00, M406SS21, and M406SS30.

4. Operation:

Vanoil’s 4 1/16” 10K side door stripper/packer is normally installed in the line above the BOP. To install the
stripper/packer, thread the collar (20) onto the hold-up threads and slide the 4 1/16"-10ksi male union into the
female. Then thread the collar (20) onto the female until it bottoms out.

The 1/2" NPT hydraulic port on the hydraulic cylinder (3) is to actuate the cylinder sleeve (9) down to initiate
a seal around coiled tubing and the 1/4" NPT hydraulic port on the body (11) is to raise the cylinder sleeve
(9) when servicing the side door stripper/packer.

When the stripper/packer assembly is in its operating position, the side door assembly (14) must be against
the packer cylinder sleeve (9) and locked in place by the lock assembly (31).

To seal off the well pressure while running tubing, actuate the packer cylinder sleeve (9) to the extended
position. The packer cylinder sleeve (9) pushes the upper bushing assembly (32) against the non-extrusion
ring (26) and packer (27). The packer (27) is then squeezed around the tubing providing a seal. Note that the
higher the well pressure and the smaller the size of the tubing, the higher the actuator pressure must be to
seal the packer (27) around the tubing.

NOTE: Adequate hydraulic pressure must be maintained on the cylinder sleeve to prevent the side
door assembly from coming in contact with the step ring during operating conditions. During normal
operating conditions, the step ring serves to indicate the position of the cylinder sleeve relative to
the primary seal.
While running tubing, the operator should periodically inject grease into the top of the stripper/packer, this
lubricates the inside diameter of the spacer bushing (5) and prevents excessive wear between the spacer
bushing (5) and the tubing. Inject grease through the 1/4" NPT port located on the bushing clamp (1).

A port is provided for the injection of lubricant, inhibitors, or other chemicals. Vanoil can supply adapters for
this port if required. Before opening the injection port, ensure the well pressure is bled off, then remove the
test plug (30). Inject fluid as required.

Packing Element Replacement:

With the tubing still in the well, seal off the well pressure using the BOP below the stripper/packer assembly.
Bleed off the pressure still contained in the stripper/packer assembly. Unlock the side door assembly (14) by
rotating the handle 180 degrees on the window lock sub-assembly (31) and then by turning the complete
window lock sub-assembly (31) enough to swing open both side door assemblies (14). Clean the packer
cylinder sleeve (9) before retracting the sleeve and completely exposing the packing elements. Cut the
primary seal, seal (24), and discard. Slide the reserve primary seal, seal (24), into the seal groove. Remove
the packer (27) and non-extrusion rings (26), assemble the new non-extrusion rings and packer. Extend the
cylinder sleeve (9) and lock the side door assemblies (14) back to their original position.

5. Assembly/Disassembly Procedures:

When assembling, it is mandatory that all components be clean and free of debris. Sealing surfaces and
seals should be lubricated, unleaded tubing and casing compound (e.g.: Shell Malleus*TC) should be used
on threaded connections.

To assemble the 4 1/16-10K Side Door Stripper/Packer:

a) Clean and lubricate all parts prior to assembling.

b) Clamp body (11) in a vise.
c) Assemble the backup and o-ring (19A & 19) to the seal sub (23), assemble the seal sub (23) to the
bottom sub (22).
d) Assemble the bottom sub (22) to the body (11), assemble the seals (24) to the seal sub (23).
e) Assemble the o-rings (7 & 8) to the cylinder sleeve (9), and the quad-ring (12) to the body (11).
Place the retainer ring (17), washer (16) and the step ring (15) on the seal sub (23) for later use.
(See step k). Assemble the lower bushing (25) into the seal sub (23).
f) Assemble the upper bushing (32) into the cylinder sleeve (9) while supporting the end of the
cylinder sleeve (9) slide the cylinder sleeve (9) into the body (11) taking care not to damage any
external sealing surfaces. Lifting hooks can be assembled in the two 3/8-16 UNC holes and used
to aid in the assembly of the cylinder sleeve (9).
g) Assemble the o-ring (10) to the body (11) and thread the hydraulic cylinder (3) into the body (11).
Assemble the o-ring (4) into the hydraulic cylinder (3).
h) Assemble the bushing sleeve (6) to the hydraulic cylinder (3) taking care not to damage the sealing
surfaces of the bushing sleeve (6). Install the 1/2" NPT plug (33) into the top of the hydraulic
cylinder (3).
i) Insert the spacer bushing (5) leaving the top exposed. Attach the bushing clamp (1) onto the top of
the spacer bushing (5) and the bushing sleeve (6).
j) Assemble both capscrews (2) into the bushing clamp (1).
k) Assemble the retainer ring (17), washer (16), and the step ring (15) to the cylinder sleeve (9).
l) Connect the hydraulics and repeat the assembly portion of the Packing Element Replacement step
listed in the Operation above. When disconnecting the hydraulics there is a 1/2" NPT plug (34) and
a 1/4" NPT plug (35) supplied to plug the hydraulic ports on the hydraulic cylinder (3) and body (11)
to prevent hydraulic fluid from draining out.
m) Assemble the o-ring (28) to the test plug (30), and assemble the test plug (30) to the bottom sub
(22).
n) Assemble the union collar (20) onto the hold-up threads of the bottom sub (22).
o) Assemble the no-go (21) to the bottom sub (22), followed by the backup ring and o-ring (29a & 29).
p) Assemble both door assemblies (14) so that when the pin end of the complete assembly is down,
both door assemblies (14) open to the left.
q) Assemble both window lock assemblies (31) onto the body (11). Assemble the capscrews (1/4-20
UNC x 1.75 long) into the window lock assembly (31). (Refer to M406SS30).

To disassemble:

a) Ensure all pressure is bled off.

b) Actuate the hydraulics so that the doors can be unlocked.
c) Ensure all hydraulic pressure is released.
d) Disassemble by reversing the assembly procedure.
e) After disassembly, check all sealing surfaces for wear such as pitting and check the seals for cuts
and cracks.

6. Maintenance and Recommended Spare Parts Listing:

Before each job, Vanoil recommends the following;

i) All brass inserts and non-extrusion rings are inspected for excessive wear. These inserts help to
prolong the life of the packer element. They should have a concentric hole and should be used
with the proper size of coiled tubing.
ii) Both primary seals, seal (24), should be inspected and replaced if damaged or worn.
iii) New packer element is used at the beginning of each job.

Vanoil recommends the following spare parts for replacement parts.
