Force and Motion Portfolio

Virtual Lab
Instructions:
1. Read through the lab completely before beginning the experiment. Check the Lab Rubric at the end of
this document for grading.
2. Collect all necessary materials before beginning the lab.
3. Create a copy of this lab so you can fill it out as you go. Do not request editing access. You can print it
and write on it, or you can make a copy in Google Docs or Microsoft Word (File→Make a copy)
4. Save a finished copy of this worksheet that includes your answers. Upload it into the Unit 4 Lesson 12
Force and Motion Apply it Dropbox in Connexus.
5. Reach out to your science teacher if you have any questions!

Forces and Motion: Basics
Instructions: Carefully read the directions to complete the virtual tasks in order. Then answer each
of the questions given.

1. Click this link: https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/forces-and-motion-basics

I. Net Force:
→ Click the “Net Force” tab.

→ Check the”sum of forces” and “values” in the top right box.

→ Complete the Net Force Table & follow the action for setting up the investigation.

II. Net Force Table:

Directions for Set-Up Before Pressing Go, Why does the cart move What is the sum &
which way do you think that way? direction of the forces?
the cart will move? (example: 70 Left)
(None, Right, Left)

Place 1 small blue guy left nowhere 0

on the very end of the
left rope & 1 small red

1
guy on the very end of
the right rope

Place the medium blue left left 50n left

guy on the very end of
the left rope & 1 small
red guy on the very
end of the right rope

Place the big blue guy right right 200n right

on the very end of the
left rope & add all 4 of
the red guys to the
right rope

III. Net Force Questions:

Type Answer HERE: nothing because the forces are balnced

Type Answer HERE: the 50kg one will move faster then the 100kg

Type Answer HERE: The scientist will have to exert a force at leat 100n Greater

The Moving Man LAB

Instructions: Carefully read the directions to complete the virtual tasks in order. Then answer each
of the questions given.

1. Click this link: https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/cheerpj/moving-man/latest/moving-man.html?simulation=moving-man

IV. The Moving Man Set-Up:

→ Click the Chart Tab at the top of the page.

2
→ Complete the following directions and observe the charts below.
-Grab the man and drag him to 4 meters.
-Wait for 2 seconds and then grab the man and take him to the house.
-Wait for 2 seconds and then grab the man and return him to 0 meters.
-Stop the simulation.
Your Screen should look similar to this:

→ Now use the phet and the image above to answer the following questions below.

V. The Moving Man Questions:

Type Answer HERE: It is going straight and because he is remaining in a constant position

3
Type Answer HERE:It starts going straight because his velocity is consistent

Type Answer HERE: The line goes into the middle due to the number zero being equalibrium of the
two sides

7. Now click the reset all button. Now grab the man and move him as slowly as you can till he
reaches the house. Notice the graph. Again, click the reset all button. Now grab the man and move
him as quickly as you can till he reaches the house. Notice the graph. They should look similar to
the following images:

Type Answer HERE:Based on the times it took graphs shown these two grabs are so different
because in graph one The man takes his time Getting there So he has very Slow levels The graph
But in Graph 2 The man does not take his time That's why we see huge spikes than big drops

VI. Analyzing the Data:

8.

4
Type Answer HERE:

a. The speed is constant.

b. The distance remains unchanged.
c. The direction of motion stays the same.
d. The speed gradually increases over time.

9.

Type Answer HERE: it is A

a. The ball’s speed is increasing.
b. The ball’s speed is decreasing.
c. The ball’s motion is constant.
d. The ball’s motion is stopping.

5
10.

Type Answer HERE: it is A

a. The object is experiencing acceleration.
b. The object is moving along a curved path.
c. The object has a negative acceleration.
d. The object moves at a constant speed.

11.

Type Answer HERE:

a. The velocity of the car remains constant throughout the journey.
b. The change in speed alone causes the velocity of the car to vary.
c. The change in direction alone causes the velocity of the car to vary.
d. The velocity of the car changes due to the change in speed and direction.

Type Answer HERE: Graph A

6
VII. Reading & Evidence Questions: Follow the instructions to open the required MyON Reading for
this portfolio. Use the two assigned books to help you answer the following questions.

Type Answer HERE:Gymnastics use their own inertia compacting there bodies so they can spin
faster and do it much better

Type Answer HERE: Gymnastics hit Landings by controlling their Muscles to spread the force
eveningly out on the mat

Type Answer HERE: They use the block the push off giving them a huge Boost of Speed using
Newton's third law of every action there is a opposite action To their advantage
