7. Each of the following questions gives a function f (x) and numbers L, x0 , and ϵ > 0.
In each case, find an open interval about x0 on which the inequality |f (x) − L| < ϵ
holds. Then give a value for δ > 0 such that for all x satisfying 0 < |x − x0 | < δ the
inequality |f (x) − L| < ϵ holds.

(a) f (x) = x + 1, L = 5, x0 = 4, ϵ = 0.01.

(b) f (x) = x2 − 5, L = 11, x0 = 4, ϵ = 1.

8. Each of the following questions gives a function f (x), a point x0 , and a positive number
lim f (x). Then find a number δ > 0 such that for all x,
ϵ. Find L = x→x 0

0 < |x − x0 | < δ ⇒ |f (x) − L| < ϵ.

(a) f (x) = 3 − 2x, x0 = 3, ϵ = 0.02.

x2 −4
(b) f (x) = x−2
, x0 = 2, ϵ = 0.05.
