Nature of graph:
Input characteristics

Theory
Common base mode
In this circuit arrangement, input is applied between the emitter and base, and output is taken
from the collector and base. Here, the base of the transistor is common to both input and
output circuits and hence the name common base connection.

Input Characteristics:
It is the curve between input current IEIE (emitter current) and input voltage VEBVEB (emitter-
base voltage) at constant collector-base voltage VCBVCB. The emitter current is taken along Y-
axis and the emitter-base voltage is along X-axis. The figure shows the input characteristics of a
typical transistor in a common-base configuration.

Output Characteristics:
It is the curve between collector current ICIC and collector base voltage, VCBVCB at constant
emitter current IEIE. The collector current is taken along Y-axis and the collector-base voltage
magnitude is along X-axis. The figure shows the output characteristics of a typical transistor in a
common base configuration.

Procedure:
Input characteristics:
 Connect the circuit as shown in the circuit diagram.
 Keep the voltage Vce=0v varying vcc
 Varying Vpb gradually note down the base current IB and emitter voltage VBE.
 Step size is not fixed becase of non-linear curve initially vary VBB in step of 0.1v one the current
start increasing varry VBB in step of upto 12v
 Repet the above procedure to step 3 for vce=5v

Output characteristics:
 Connect the circuit as show in the circuit diagram
 Keep base current IB=20mA)by VBB
 Varying vcc gradually is step of 1v upto 12v and notedown collector current IC and collector
emitter voltage (vcc)
 Repeat above procedure step 3 for IB=60ma

To plot the graph:

 Plot the input characteristics by taking VBE on x-axis add IB on y-axis at a constant vce as a
constant h-parameter.
 Plot the output characteristics by taking VCE on x-axis add IC on y-axis at a constant IB as a
constant h-parameter.

Calculation from graph:

 Input characteristics to obtain imput resistance find vbe and ib for a constant vce on of the
input characteristics
 Input impedance =hie=ri=vbe\ib [vce in constant]
 Reverse voltage gain=hre=vbe\vce[ib in constant]
 Output characteristics to obtain output resistance find ic and vcd at constant
 Output impedance RO=1\hoe =ic\vce[ib is constant ]
 Forward current gain hfe=ic\ib[vce is constant]

2. The resverse voltage gain (hre)=20*10
3. The forward current gain (hfe)=59
4. The out put conductance (hoe)=9.52ma
