HYDRAULIC STRUCTURES (CIVE 1786)

HOMEWORK 1

Question (1): An open channel has a cross-sectional area of 32 m2. Find the
best hydraulic section for the following cases and the best section among all
sections.

i. The channel is rectangular,

ii. The channel is triangular,
iii. The Channel is circular,
iv. The channel is trapezoidal , z=1
v. The channel is trapezoidal.

Question (2): An earthen canal has to irrigate 30,000 ha of wheat. If the duty
at head is 400ha per m3/s, determine the dimensions and bed slope of the
canal by Manning’s formula. Assume B/y =6, n=0.025, side slope 1.5:1 and
permissible velocity of 0.8 m/s.

Question (3): An earthen channel in good condition carries a discharge of 15

m3/s with a mean velocity of 0.8 m/s. determine the bed slope. Assume the
bottom width as twice the depth of flow. Take Bazin’s coefficient as 1.3 and
side slope 1.5:1

Question (4): Design a lined channel to carry a discharge of 80 m 3/s. Take

B/y as 5, C as 60, side slope as 1.5:1 and bed slope as 1:5000.

Question (5): Design an irrigation channel by Kennedy’s theory to carry a

discharge of 50 m3/s. Take: N (Kutter’s rugosity coefficient)=0.0225 and m
(critical velocity ratio)=1, longitudinal slope S=1/5000.
Question (6): Design an unlined stable channel in alluvial soil by the tractive
force approach for a discharge of 50 m3/s from the following data:

i. Bed slope=1/4000 ii. Side slopes =0.5:1

iii. Manning’s n =0.025 iv. Permissible tractive stress

=0.25 kgf/m2
