GE4091 - Petroleum Reservoir Simulation - Review Session

CHAPTER 1. Introduction to Petroleum Reservoir Simulation

1/ Definition and purpose of reservoir simulation

* Definition:
-> A powerful tool for evaluating reservoir performance with the purpose of
establishing a sound field development plan
-> A helpful tool for investigating problems associated with the petroleum
recovery process and searching for appropriate solutions to the problems

*Purpose:
To predict petroleum production for efficient oil field management with: 

2/ Multidisciplinary inputs in reservoir simulation

*Input in Reservoir Simulation:

- Physical model, Computer code, Mathematical model, Numerical model.
3/ Reservoir simulation workflow

*Reservoir Simulation Basics

• The reservoir is divided into a number of cells
• Basic data is provided for each cell
• Wells are positioned within the cells
• The required well production rates are specified as a function of time
• The equations are solved to give the pressure and saturations for each block as
well as the production of each phase from each well.

CHAPTER 2. Reservoir Static Model

1/ Definition of a static model

A reservoir static model represents the geological structure of the reservoir by

an array of discrete cells with which values of the reservoir attributes such as
porosity, permeability and water saturation are associated.
By static model, we mean that it is constructed by data collected before
reservoir fluids flow up to the surface.

5/ Statistical vs. conceptual information in static models
* Statistical algorithms to generate continuous property distributions within the
reservoir, providing a more comprehensive understanding of its characteristics.

+ Deterministic: for a quick and simple model

•Interpolation
•Trend modelling
+ Stochastic modelling
Distribute the properties stochastically based on observed trends and statistical
methods
