Tutorial problems 14
This tutorial covers the definite integral. It is designed to get your pattern recognition skills
up to speed. We haven’t so far come up with any fancy integration techniques, though we will
soon! For now, we have to use our Riemann sums
Here are a few reminders:
b−a
where = n
and xi = a + i∆x
If you don’t remember what integrable means, remind yourself in Stewart on page 314.
Rb
Remember also that the definite integral a f (x)dx is the area under the curve of y = f (x)
from a to b. Remind yourself about the subtleties of the word ”under” here.
Have a read through the rest of chapter 4.2 in Stewart to remind yourself of the other important
points in this chapter.
Part I
Choose a selection of the following and Write out the definite integrals as Riemann sums, but
do not evaluate the limits:
Z 1 Z 1 Z π
1. x dx 2. sin(x) dx 3. cos(x) dx
0 0 0

x dx = lim 2+

i=1
Let’s make sure that we can understand why. In this case what is ∆x, what is x1 and what do
you want xn to be?
Now the other way around. Now choose a selection of the following and write these Riemann
sums as definite integrals.
n n n
X 1 i X 1 i X 1 i
1. lim sin 2. lim cos 3. lim en

Now select a few of these and write them as the limit of a Riemann sum AND take the limit to
give the answer to the definite integral. Note that you will have to look up, or remember your
sums over i, i2 , i3 etc.
