COURSE DESCRIPTION
GST 107 - Use of English is designed to enhance students' proficiency in using English effectively across various
contexts, with a focus on both written and spoken communication. The course begins with an exploration of
communication within social groups and workplaces, highlighting key features and strategies for effective
interaction. Students will explore the elements of spoken English, including its features, classifications, and
practical applications, and will develop critical listening and reading skills. These skills are essential for
understanding diverse forms of communication, from casual conversations to formal discourse.
The course also covers key aspects of English language structure and usage, including word formation processes,
vocabulary development, and subject-verb agreement. Students will learn to use reported speech and tense
sequences, enhancing their ability to convey accurate and coherent messages. Additionally, practical skills are
emphasized through summary writing, note-taking, and composition, with a focus on essays, letters, and reports.
This comprehensive approach ensures students are well-equipped to apply English effectively in both academic
and professional settings.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the course are to:
a) enable the students to communicate effectively in the English language in all spheres of life;
b) identify the pronunciation problems of students and acquaint them with the correct ways of pronouncing
English words;
c) educate students on the mechanics of writing and spelling, as well as the correct use of punctuation marks
which will help them write error-free essays;
d) develop the reading ability of the students, which, in turn, will help them build their vocabulary and improve
their comprehension; and
e) help students achieve concord in their spoken and written English through the correct use of tenses, number
and gender.

Week 6: Vocabulary Development and the English Registers
Week 7: Subject-Verb Agreement in English
Week 8: Reported Speech: Features and Rules
Week 9: Active and Passive Voice: Features and Rules
Week 10: Tense in English: Definition, Types and Application
Week 11: Note-Taking, Note-Making and Summary Writing
Week 12: Basic Composition Skills (Essays, Letters, Reports, Memos, etc)
