Telling Time
1.
Telling time can be
done 3 ways:
▪ By using the figures/ numbers only
▪ By using 24hours format
▪ By Using “past” and “to”
3
By using figures:
Just say the numbers that you see:
- 4.45 = four forty five
- 5.20 = five twenty
- 10.17 = ten seventeen
- 8.30 = eight thirty
- 4.45 AM = four forty five AM (Jam empat empat puluh lima pagi)
- 4.45 PM = four forty five PM (Jam empat empat puluh lima sore)
- 10.17 AM = ten seventeen AM (Jam sepuluh tujuh belas pagi)
- 10.17 PM = ten seventeen PM (Jam sepuluh tujuh belas malam)
5
By using 24 hours format:
Just like what we do in the previous explanation. But, this time
without AM or PM. Just the numbers.
However, we only use this style if we talk about travel timetable (jadwal
perjalanan)
6
By using “past” & “to”:
Here terms you have to remember:
- Past = lebih
- To = kurang
- 30 minutes = half
- 15 minutes = quarter
- You tell time backwards (baca jamnya dari belakang/ menit dulu)
- If the minutes is in 1 – 30, use past
Example: 6.30 = half past six
8.25 = twenty five past eight
1.10 = ten past one
6.04 = four past six
7
- If the minutes is in 31 – 60, use to , and add 1 to the clock figure (ketika
menggunakan to, di bagian jam angkanya ditambah 1)
Example: 6.31 = twenty nine to seven
(twenty nine berasal dari 60 menit dikurangi 31. seven berasal dari jam 6 ditambah 1)
8.45 = quarter to nine
11.50 = ten to twelve
9.35 = twenty five to ten
Now, try to tell the following time as your exercise:
- 7.16 - 8.42 - 5.18 - 6. 17
- 9. 56 - 3.45 - 8. 37 - 6. 59
- 10. 42 - 11.15 - 12. 00 - 8. 40
- 10.40 - 3.49 - 4.10 - 4.46
