Find the average ratio of teachers to students.
5. If an instructor counts the final examination in a course four times as much as each 1-hour
examination, what is the weighted average grade of a student who received grades of 69, 75,
56, and 72 in four 1-hour examinations and a final examination grade of 78?
6. A machinery depreciates by 40% in the 1st year, 25% in the 2nd year, 15% in the 3rd year and
10% in the 4th year. What is the average rate of depreciation during the whole period?
7. A carpenter buys 500 Birr worth of nails at 50 Birr per kilogram and 500 Birr worth of nails

at 10 Birr per kilogram. Find the average cost of 1 kilogram of nails.

8. In a 400- meter athletic competition a participant covers the distance as given below. Find the
average speed.
Speed (Meters per second)
First 80 meters 10
Next 240 meters 7.5
Last 80 meters 10

9. Following is the distribution of marks obtained by 500 students in statistics.
Marks more than 0 10 20 30 40 50
Number of students 500 460 400 200 100 30
a) Calculate the most suitable average
b) Obtain Q 1, Q3, D2, D7, P28, P40 and P80 and interpret the results.
10. The following data are the compressive strengths of samples, in newtons per square
millimeter, were obtained from test results on concrete cubes in England:

Compressive strength Number of concrete cubes

43.3 -- 45.8 3
45.9 – 48.4 5
48.5 – 51.00 13
51.1 – 53.6 11
53.7 – 56.2 6
56.3 – 58.8 120

Compute and interpret the following statistics.

a. the median b. the mode c. the standard deviation
11. The mean and standard deviation of a set of numbers are respectively 500 & 10.
a. If 10 is added to each of the numbers in the set, then what will be the mean, variance and
standard deviation of the new set?
b. If each of the numbers in the set are multiplied by -5, then what will be the mean, variance
and standard deviation of the new set?
12. The mean and standard deviation of a sample of 100 observations were found to be 40 and 12
respectively. On checking it was found that two observations were wrongly taken as 23 and 15
in place of 43 and 18. Calculate the correct mean and standard deviation.
13. The average number of days that construction workers miss per year is 11. The standard
deviation is 2.3. The average number of days that factory workers miss per year is 8 with a
standard deviation of 1.8. Which class is more variable in terms of days missed?
