Dry needling

1/
Physiotherapy has evolved significantly in recent years with the
research and emergence of new techniques. Dry needling is one of
them. It originated from the work conducted by an American named
Jaynet Travel. They highlighted the fact that when anesthetizing to
relieve pain, the needle itself is more effective than the substance
injected. Thus, dry needling, which directly targets muscles, emerged
compared to acupuncture.

It's a technique increasingly used in physiotherapy, particularly

popular in recent years. This targeted therapeutic approach is
designed to relieve muscle and joint pain by precisely targeting
muscle tension points, offering precise and direct pain relief.

Dry needling has become popular for its precision and as a

therapeutic option for those averse to medication.

2/ Procedure Explanation and Mechanism of Action

Often, muscle tension results from poor blood flow, leading to

muscle contraction and the formation of trigger points. These are
areas within a muscle causing local pain or referred pain elsewhere in
the body, often felt as knots due to muscle contraction from overuse,
tension, poor posture, or injury.

Process:

The specialist identifies muscle trigger points, often through

palpation.
Fine needles are inserted into these areas to induce involuntary
muscle contraction followed by relaxation, relieving tension and pain.
The needles may be manipulated to stimulate surrounding muscles
and tissues.
After stimulation, the needles are removed, and specific stretches or
exercises may be recommended.
Dry needling aims to increase blood flow, relax muscles, and reduce
inflammation, directly targeting the problem's source.

3/ Use and Clinical Effectiveness

Recent studies have shown improved oxygenation and better

vascularization in muscle tissues after dry needling therapy.

Types of dry needling:

Dry Needling Périarticulaire/Musculaire: Needles are inserted directly

into muscles or areas around joints with tension or trigger points.
Dry Needling Guided by ultrasound : This method uses ultrasound for
precise needle insertion, ensuring accurate placement in areas of
tension or pain.

4/ Conclusion

In conclusion, dry needling is an effective technique for relieving

muscle pain by targeting trigger points. It yields very good clinical
results.
