Scope / Objectives of the project:
The primary objective of the Smart Home Gesture Control System is to develop
a user-friendly, gesture-based interface that allows users to manage various
home appliances, such as lights, fans, entertainment systems, and security de-
vices, through simple hand movements. This system is designed to improve ac-
cessibility, especially for individuals with physical impairments or limited mobil-
ity, by providing an intuitive, hands-free alternative to traditional control meth-
ods like switches or remote controls. Additionally, the project aims to demon-
strate the versatility of gesture recognition technology by integrating multiple
smart home functions into a single interface. Cost-effective and compact com-
ponents, such as the APDS-9960 gesture sensor and microcontrollers like Ar-
duino, are used to create a practical, responsive setup suitable for daily use.
The system is engineered to ensure real-time responsiveness and reliable op-
eration, making it an efficient and scalable solution for modern home automa-
tion.

Methodology:
The methodology for the Smart Home Gesture Control System involves a struc-
tured approach, beginning with system design and planning. In this phase,
project objectives are clarified, and system requirements are analyzed to deter-
mine the necessary components for gesture-based home automation. Next,
hardware and software components are selected, including the APDS-9960
gesture sensor, Arduino or ESP8266 microcontroller, and additional modules
for specific functions like lighting, fans, and security. The system is then de-
signed, with the microcontroller programmed to interpret gestures and activate
corresponding appliances. Once assembled, the setup undergoes rigorous
testing to ensure accuracy, reliability, and responsiveness of gesture recogni-
tion. Finally, the system is evaluated in terms of user experience, energy effi-
ciency, and functionality, ensuring it meets all objectives and performs effec-
tively in a real-world setting.
Note: In case of fabrication work in the project, an engineering draw-
ing with dimensions / detailed design should be attached to the pro-
posal.

KSCST: Student Project Programme: 48th series: 2024-2025 3

Expected Outcome of the project:
The expected outcome of the Smart Home Gesture Control System project is a
functional, reliable, and user-friendly system that allows users to control various
home appliances through simple hand gestures. This system will provide an in-
tuitive interface that improves accessibility, especially for users with limited mo-
bility or physical disabilities. It should successfully integrate multiple home func-
tions—such as lighting, fan control, entertainment system management, and
basic security—into a single, gesture-based platform. The system is expected
to demonstrate real-time responsiveness and accuracy in gesture recognition,
providing seamless and hands-free operation. Additionally, the project should
showcase an energy-efficient and cost-effective setup using compact electronic
components, making it suitable for practical implementation in everyday smart
home environments.
