HW #3 DEPARTMENT of CIVIL ENGINEERING

3*18
STRENGTH of MATERIALS I

1 The rigid beam is supported by a pin at A and

wires BD and CE. If the load P on the beam
causes the end C to be displaced 10 mm
downward, determine the normal strain
developed in wires CE and BD.

2 Two bars are used to support a load P. When

unloaded, AB is 5 in. long, AC is 8 in. long, and
the ring at A has coordinates (0, 0). If a load is
applied to the ring at A, so that it moves it to the
coordinate position (0.25 cm., -0.73 cm.),
determine the normal strain in each bar.

3 The piece of plastic is originally rectangular.

a) Determine the shear strain at corners A
and D if the plastic distorts as shown by
the dashed lines.
b) Determine the average normal strain
that occurs along the diagonals AC and
DB.

4 The force applied to the handle of the rigid

lever arm causes the arm to rotate clockwise
through an angle of 3° about pin A. Determine
the average normal strain developed in the
wire. Originally, the wire is unstretched.
5 The state of strain at a point on the bracket has components 𝜖𝑥 = −100(10−6 ) , 𝜖𝑦 = 400(10−6 )
and 𝛾𝑥𝑦 = −300(10−6 ) Use the strain-transformation equations to determine the equivalent in-
plane strains on an element oriented at an angle of 𝜃 = 30𝑜 clockwise from the original position.
Sketch the deformed element due to these strains within the x–y plane. Show all values on a
Mohr’s circle.

6
The state of strain at the point on the bracket has components 𝜖𝑥 = 250(10−6 ) , 𝜖𝑦 = 300(10−6 )
and 𝛾𝑥𝑦 = −180(10−6 ). Use the strain-transformation equations to determine (a) the in-plane
principal strains and (b) the maximum in-plane shear strain and average normal strain. In each case
specify the orientation of the element and show how the strains deform the element within the x–y
plane. Show all values on a Mohr’s circle.

7 The 45 strain rosette is mounted on a beam. The

following readings are obtained for each gauge:
𝜖𝑎 = 300(10−6 ) , 𝜖𝑏 = −250(10−6 ) and
𝜖𝑐 = −450(10−6 ) . Determine (a) the in-plane
principal strains and (b) the maximum in-plane
shear strain and average normal strain. In each
case show the deformed element due to these
strains.

8
The 45 strain rosette is mounted on a beam. The
following readings are obtained for each gauge:
𝜖𝑎 = 650(10−6 ) , 𝜖𝑏 = −300(10−6 ) and
𝜖𝑐 = 480(10−6 ) . Determine (a) the in-plane
principal strains and (b) the maximum in-plane
shear strain and average normal strain. In each
case show the deformed element due to these
strains.

Question #4
The strain rosette is mounted at a point on a beam. The
following readings are obtained for each gauge: 𝜖 =
100(10 ) , 𝜖 = −200(10 ) and 𝜖 = 150(10 ) . 90
a) Determine state of strain at that

b) Sketch the deformed element due to this state of 135
strain
c) Show the points corresponding to a, b
and c directions on a Mohr’s circle

10 3) Two forces are applied to the system

system, C moves to 3 mm right and 8
