ii. 𝑦 ′′′ − 2𝑦 ′′ − 𝑦 ′ + 2𝑦 = 0

4. Determine for what values of a and b the following DEs is exact, and obtain the general
solution of the exact DEs.
i. (𝑦 + 𝑥 3 )𝑑𝑥 + (𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 3 )𝑑𝑦 = 0
ii. (2𝑥𝑦 2 + 𝑦𝑒 𝑥 )𝑑𝑥 + (2𝑥 2 𝑦 + 𝑎𝑒 𝑥 − 1)𝑑𝑦 = 0
iii. (𝑦 3 + 𝑏𝑥𝑦 4 − 2𝑥)𝑑𝑥 + (3𝑥𝑦 2 + 20𝑥 2 𝑦 3 )𝑑𝑦 = 0

5. Prove that if M and N in 𝑀(𝑥, 𝑦)𝑑𝑥 + 𝑁(𝑥, 𝑦)𝑑𝑦 = 0 satisfy the equation 𝑀𝑦 = 𝑁𝑥 + 𝑥 𝑁
then, 𝐹 = 𝑥 𝑘 is an integrating factor. Hence, solve the DE 4𝑦𝑑𝑥 + 𝑥𝑑𝑦 = 0.

6. Solve the initial value problem 𝐿 𝑑𝑡 + 𝑅𝐼 = 0, 𝐼(0) = 𝐼0 where I, R, L are, respectively,
the current, the resistance and inductance in electrical circuits (R and L are constant).
7. The growth rate of a bacteria population is proportional to its size. Initially the population
is 10,000, while after 10 days its size is 25,000. What will be the population after 20 days?
8. For the following first order linear DEs find the solution.
i. 𝑥𝑦 ′ = 𝑦 + (𝑥 + 1)2
ii. 𝑦 ′ + 3𝑦 = 𝑒 2𝑥 + 6
iii. 𝑦 ′ = cos3 𝑥 + 𝑦 cot 𝑥
iv. 𝑦 ′ + 𝑦 tan 𝑥 = sin 2𝑥, 𝑦(0) = 1
v. 𝑥𝑦 ′ − 3𝑦 = 𝑥 4 (𝑒 𝑥 + cos 𝑥) − 2𝑥 2 , 𝑦(𝜋) = 𝜋 3 𝑒 𝜋 + 2𝜋 2
