1 Define Friction and explain the concept of Angle of Friction and Angle of CO3 L1 1.1.1
repose?
2 Define Coefficient of friction and explain Coefficient of static and kinetic CO3 L1 1.1.1
friction.
3 Explain the concept of Limiting Frictional Force. CO3 L2 1.1.1
4. Determine the frictional force developed on the block shown in Fig. CO3 L2 1.3.2
When,
(i) P = 40 N,
(ii) P = 80 N. Coefficient of static friction between the block and
floor is μs = 0.3 and μk = 0.25 and
(iii) Also find the value of P when the block is about to move
Ans:
i) F = 34.64 N (Block is not moving)
ii) Fk = 35 N (Block is in motion)
iii) P = 41.9 N (Impending Motion)
5. A body of weight 300 N is kept on a rough horizontal plane and a force P CO3 L2 1.3.2
is applied to just move the body horizontally as shown. Find the
magnitude of force P required if coefficient of static friction is 0.4.
Ans: P = 112.57 N
6. Determine whether the block shown in the figure is in equilibrium. Find CO3 L2 1.3.2
the magnitude and direction of the frictional force. Take µ s = 0.12 and
µk = 0.1.
Ans: θ = 29.05°
10 A uniform ladder of length 3.25 m and weighing 250 N is placed against a CO3 L2 1.3.2
smooth vertical wall with its lower end 1.25 m from the wall. The
coefficient of friction between the ladder and floor is 0.3. What is the
frictional force acting on the ladder at the point of contact between the
ladder and the floor? Show that the ladder will remain in equilibrium in
this position.
Ans: The amount of the force of friction available at the point of contact
(75 N) is more than the force of friction required for equilibrium (52.1 N).
Therefore the ladder will remain in an equilibrium position.
11 A ladder shown in Fig. is 4 m long and is supported by a horizontal floor CO3 L2 1.3.2
and vertical wall. The coefficient of friction at the wall is 0.25 and that at
the floor is 0.5. The weight of the ladder is 30 N and is considered to be
concentrated at G. The ladder also supports a vertical load of 150 at C.
Determine the reactions at A and B and compute the least value of (α) at
which the ladder may be placed without slipping to the left.
Ans: x = 3m
13 A uniform ladder 3 m long weighs 200 N. It is placed against a wall
making an angle of 60° with the floor as shown in Fig. The coefficient of
friction between the wall and the ladder is 0.25 and that between the floor
and ladder is 0.35. The ladder, in addition to its own weight, has to
support a man of 1000 N at its top at B. Calculate: (i) The horizontal force
P to be applied to ladder at the floor level to prevent slipping. (ii) If the
force P is not applied, what should be the minimum inclination of the
ladder with the horizontal, so that there is no slipping of it with the man at
its top.
