LESSON 2: GETTING STARTED WITH AUDACITY

Audacity
The sounds and music we hear today is a product of a lot of editing and refining. Wether it is a
song, an interview, or a podcast, a computer application is needed to record and edit the
sounds for these purposes.
Audacity is free audio editing software. Anyone can download it online. There are five (5)
themes that we can choose from for the interface: Classic, Light, Dark, High Contrast and
Custom.
Open Audacity
Opening Audacity is just like opening any program on our computers. Here are various ways to
open audacity:
a. Find the Audacity icon on the desktop, and double-click it.
b. Look for Audacity using the Windows Start button. AUDACITY was founded by
c. Use the Search button, and type in “Audacity.” Domonic Mazzoni and Roger
d. Pin the Audacity to Start menu by right-clicking it. Dannenberg in 1999. It was
released the following year.
Audacity Window
1. Playback Control Toolbar functions like the buttons on a CD and DVD player.

2. Tools Toolbar contains commands that work directly on our audio files in the Track
Window.

3. Meter Toolbar shows input and output levels. It tells us the level of input that we are
getting from our microphone or recording device.

4. Mixer Toolbar enables us to adjust two (2) things:

a. Slider near the microphone icon adjusts the level of input on our computer’s sound
card. Increasing it means increasing how much input on our recording device will
receive.
b. Slider near the speaker icon adjusts the sound card’s output and adjusts the volume
of our audio file.
5. Edit Toolbar contains more detailed commands that work directly on our files in the Track
Window like cutting, copying and pasting.

6. Track Window shows the audio files called tracks when we work in our Audacity Project. It is our
main stage for our audio files or recordings. The numbers on top is a timeline that tells us the
seconds or fractions of a second in our track.

7. Selection Toolbar shows us the sample rate and other details regarding our selection in our
track: where it was selected, how much it was selected, and where it is in whole track.
Save an Audacity Project
Saving files in Audacity is the same as saving in other Office applications

1. Go to File, and click Save Project As when saving for the first time.
2. Choose a file location, and type our desired file name.

When we save our work as Audacity project, the file extension is .aup. It means the file type is
not yet our digital audio, and it cannot be played as an audio file by any application.
