Communicating One's Position through Contextualized Writing

Determine the issue and the position discussed. Give evidences by citing the
sentence/s or paragraph/s:

1. On the gaps in understanding digital divide and their impact

Digital divide could be viewed from historical and sociological perspectives of

literacy. Venezky (1990; and McKay, 1993 in Casela, 2013) considered literacy to
be changing over time since the value a society places on it can change over
time. In determining the rising literacy demands of the 21st century, Christie
(1990, in McKay, 1993 as cited in Casela, 2013), describes a more complex
phenomenon, as contrasted to the literacy demands of the earlier periods. This
indicates the digital divide brought about by 21st century technology. Christie
stresses the greater level of sophistication in literacy such as new kinds of
reading, writing, viewing, or new genres needed for generating new knowledge
and new ways of thinking from digital media or cyber technology, thus called
digital literacy. The 21st century technology has paved the way to redefine
literacy, reidentify its perspective, and redirect its purposes which could have
resulted from digital divide among nations or institutions.
Learners of the 21st century have been provided with different kinds of
learning environments like dynamic multimedia hypertext, hypermedia,
interactive simulation, virtual environments, serious games, and collaborative
learning. Easy access to advanced technology via the World Wide Web Results
to the development of information-rich learning environments that are
potentially available to all web users. Seel (2006) avers that media may change
the features of learning environments. However, and unfortunately, not all
learners can access such advanced technology and have opportunities to
experience these learning environments. Therefore, such change could relate to
the digital divide.
On the contrary, Clark (1983, in Graesser et al., 2008), points out that
pedagogy underlying a learning environment explains learning gains, not the
technology itself. From these perspectives, literacy has become extensive and
intensive, recognizing the increasing importance of digital literacy. On the other
hand, such learning gains could result in a digital divide since not all learners
have the advantage of accessing and using this digital technology. Therefore, it
could have been a loss or disadvantage.
Indeed, computer technology has tremendously transformed the learners'
literacy experiences into cyberspace. In today's classrooms, learners encounter
digital literacies in various forms of instructional technologies (Hancock, 2008;
Anderson and Baljthy, 2009). Digital technology influences the literacy of
learners and has transformed them into netizens, as they get involved and
communicate in cyberspace.
Furthermore, Prensky (2001, in Graham & Dziuban, 2008), describes that
digital natives expect the immediacy of technology, collaborative learning
opportunities, and active learning environments. Oblinger and Oblinger (2005, in
Graham and Dziuban, 2008), claim that for these learners, computers and
technologies are a way of life; the internet is more important. While learners from
the developed and even the developing countries have been increasingly
adapting their skills and strategies to the sophisticated demands of digital
literacy; unfortunately, those from underdeveloped nations have been
struggling to meet these demands since digital technology does not seem to
serve and to be utilized as potential method of improving the learning process in
particular, due to limited access or scarcity of resources and infrastructure;
despite this Ghinea and Chen (2006), for their part, recognized it.

The digital environment we have now has a lot of

advantages and disadvantages such new technological
advancements, every year new technology have been
developed or discover but not a lot of people can afford
or adapt in new trend due to high demand that needed.
