Sheet 8 AC circuits EEP116

(AC Power Calculations)(Jan 2022)

1) Find the average power delivered by the ideal current source in the circuits
shown in the Fig. if 𝑖 g (t) = 6 cos(5000t) mA

2) The current Ig in the frequency-domain circuits is 50∠0° mA (rms)

a) Find the average and reactive power for the current source.
b) Is the current source absorbing or delivering average power?
c) Is the current source absorbing or delivering reactive power?
d) Find the average and reactive powers associated with each impedance branch
in the circuit.
e) Check the balance between delivered and absorbed average power.
f) Check the balance between delivered and absorbed magnetizing vars.
3) Find ZL for maximum average power transfer to ZL and find the maximum
average power transferred in the circuits shown in the Fig.

4) Three loads are connected in parallel across a 300 V(rms) as shown in the Fig.
Load 1 absorbs 3 kW at unity power factor; Load 2 absorbs 5 kVA at 0.8 leading;
Load 3 absorbs 5 kW and delivers 6 kvars.
a) Find the impedance that is equivalent to the three parallel loads.
b) Find the power factor of the equivalent load as seen from the line’s input
terminals.
5) The three parallel loads in the circuit shown in the Fig. can be described as
follows:
• Load 1 is absorbing an average power of 6 kW and delivering reactive power
of 8 kvars.
• Load 2 is absorbing an average power of 9 kW and reactive power of
3 kvars.
• Load 3 is a 25Ω resistor in parallel with a capacitor whose reactance is -5Ω

Find the rms value and the phase angle of 𝑉 g if 𝑉 o = 250∠0° V

6) A single-phase 400V, 50 Hz Load takes a supply current of 50A at a power factor

of 0.6 lagging. The motor power factor has been improved to 0.9 lagging by
connecting a capacitor in parallel. Calculate the capacity of the capacitor required.

7) The loading of a factory on a 100V , 60Hz system includes:

• 20KW heating (unity power factor)

• 10KW induction motors (0.7 lagging power factor)
• 5KW lighting (0.85 lagging power factor )
a. Establish the power triangle for the total loading on the supply.
b. Determine the power factor capacitor that must be placed in
parallel with the load to raise the power factor unity.
