AP Chemistry Abwriteup - Notes
Laboratory
A GENERAL LAB WRITE-UP
The lab write-up has several purposes. First, the write-up provides a guideline for someone else who might want to repeat
your experiment and verify your results. Second, the write-up documents the lab: what you did, what happened, and
what you learned from the experience. The audience for this write-up is YOURSELF the week before the AP Exam.
Remind yourself of the experience, the nuances of the procedure, why you did what you did and how it fits into the
chemistry course.
PURPOSE
This is a short sentence that states what you perceive is the reason for doing the lab. The lab may have a clear-cut
goal. The Conclusion relates back to the Purpose. These two statements alone give a snapshot of the lab.
BACKGROUND DISCUSSION
This section is a brief discussion of how the lab works or the basic principles upon which this lab is based. In this
case, Colorimetry and Beer’s Law should be defined and briefly explained. Details such as the absorption
spectrum for Red 40 and the choice of light used in the experiment would show up in this section. This
discussion sets the stage for the data that will be measured.
APPARATUS
Assume that someone wishes to repeat your lab to verify your results. This section is where you tell them all of
the equipment and chemicals that they need to gather before the lab.
PROCEDURE
This is a step-by-step set of instructions on how to repeat your lab.
DATA
Before you do the lab, you should put together a Data Table that organizes all of the measurements and
observations that are made during the lab. For your lab write-up, this table is filled with your data. Be careful to
make the distinction between data and calculations. The Absorbance is data, the concentrations of the diluted
solutions is a calculation.
CONCLUSIONS
Refer back to the Purpose of the lab and write your conclusions. You can also include other ideas that you
learned in addition to what you expected to find out. If everyone has a result for the same thing, as in this lab, you
should include class data, the accuracy and precision of the class data. Accuracy is quantified as % Error and
Precision is quantified as the average deviation.
SOURCES OF ERROR
Can you come up with a specific reason why your data is higher or lower than the class average? State the reason
and follow through the calculation to show why the result is higher or lower than the class average.
