TYPES OF SOFTWARE

UNIT 1
PROGRAM
Computers cannot do anything on their own.
The user instructs the computer, what to do, how to do and
when to do.
In order to perform any task, user must give a set of
instructions in a particular sequence to the computer.
These sets of instructions are called PROGRAMS.
SOFTWARE
Software is a set of one or more programs that work
together to help the computer perform a task.
Examples of software :
MS -Word , MS PowerPoint ,MS Paint etc.
HARDWARE
Computer hardware are the physical components of the
computer which you can touch, feel and see or hold in
your hand.
But a software cannot be touched. It is a collection of
programming code installed on your computer's hard
drive.
Examples of Hardware:
Mouse, Keyboard, Monitor etc.

Software can be classified mainly into following categories and
sub-categories are shown:

SYSTEM SOFTWARE
System Software are sets of programs, responsible for
running the computer, controlling various operations of the
computer systems and management of computer
resources.
It can be classified into three categories as follows:
Operating System
Language Processor; and
Utility Software
OPERATING SYSTEM
OS allows us to communicate with the computer
It is the interface between the user and the computer – we
are using a Graphical User Interface - GUI
It is the first software installed when you buy a computer.
Example: WINDOWS 10, UNIX, LINUX, MAC OS etc.
LANGUAGE PROCESSOR
A language processor /translator is a type of systems software.
A translator translates into binary language and vice versa.
Example of language translators are :

Compiler
Assembler
Interpreter
COMPUTER
LANGUAGES
Computers understand Binary language. All other languages have to be
translated for the computer.
Low level
Languages can be broadly classified as: language
High level
language
Low level language consists of:
i) Machine Language , and ii) Assembly Language
Machine Language or Binary language has two digits 0 and 1
Example of different High-level languages are C, C++, C#, Python ,
Java etc.
UTILITY SOFTWARE
Utility softwares ensure smooth functioning of the
computer system. They assist the OS in carrying out
tasks as per user instructions.

File Management System Management

ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
A virus is a computer program that can disturb the normal
functioning of the computer.
It can slow down the computer or may lead to complete system
crash.
An Antivirus scans and identifies the viruses and removes them,
and thus protects your computer.
Examples are: Norton, McAfee, Quick Heal, AVG etc.
FILE MANAGEMENT TOOLS

The file management utility


manages files on computers.
File explorer can organize
the files into different drives.
Files and folders can be
copied and pasted from one
location to another.
DISK MANAGEMENT TOOLS
Storage drives, such as disk drives and flash
drives are installed in the computer, Disk
management tools manage these drives.

One way to manage is by making


partitions and naming them for
smooth management.
Example – D: drive, C: drive,
E:drive etc.
BACKUP UTILITY
Data stored on any
storage device can get lost
or deleted due to various
reasons like, virus, theft,
fire, flood, etc.
To avoid this , the backup
facility helps to maintain a
backup which is a copy of
the data stored and is
updated at regular
intervals .
DISK CLEANUP
These software applications remove unnecessary files and folders
from the device. This results in clearing out space, resulting in
improved speed of the computer. Cleaning apps are also required for
phones and other devices.
DISK DEFRAGMENTER
Sometimes there may be files
whose contents are scattered
across different locations .This
reduces the speed of data
access.
Disk Defragmenters
rearranges the files so that
they are stored in adjacent
locations ,hence increasing
the space and the speed to
access data from these files.
OPERATIONS SUPPORT SYSTEM

Cellular network is most commonly


the native connectivity method
deployed with most cell phones,
smartphones, and dial-up devices.
Cellular networks use radio waves
to transmit information.
Internet which is the largest
network can use the satellites as
well as fibre-optic infrastructure to
relay information.
