SLG CS1 7.2.4 Formulas and Functions (AVERAGEIF, VLOOKUP)
Module Code : 7.0 Integration of Spreadsheet, Word Processing, and Presentation Tools
Lesson Code : 7.2.4 Formulas and Functions: AVERAGEIF and VLOOKUP
Time Frame : 30 minutes
By the end of this learning guide module, the students should be able to:
We have discussed that a formula is an expression that calculates the value of a cell. On the other
hand, we have also discussed that functions are predefined formulas readily available in Excel.
We can use the formulas AVERAGEIF and VLOOKUP in making our job faster, easier, and more
accurate.
For example, you can quickly get your average grade in Science from Grade 1 up to Grade 6 using the
AVERAGEIF function.
You can look up for some values in a range like getting your final grade in Math in your report card
using VLOOKUP.
These are just some of your life's simple problems wherein using MS Excel functions would be most
beneficial.

AVERAGEIF Function
Purpose: Calculates the average of the numbers in a range that meet the supplied criteria.
Criteria can be supplied as numbers, strings, or references.
Arguments: range
One or more cells, including numbers or names, arrays, or references.
NOTE
If average_range is not provided, AVERAGEIF will calculate the average of numeric values in the
range argument.
AVERAGEIF will automatically ignore empty cells, even when the criteria match. In other words,
AVERAGEIF will not include empty cells that meet criteria as zero in the average. AVERAGEIF
returns #DIV/0! if no cells in the range meet criteria.

Purpose: Looks for something in a range of cells, then it returns that something that is
in the same row as the value you are looking for in a datasheet that is listed
vertically.

Hands-on Activity:
Using your laptop, open a blank new worksheet to be able to do the following activity:
The following data shows the grades of Emmanuel from Grades 1 to Grade 6. Encode these data in an
Excel worksheet. Then, write the correct function to obtain the needed requirements listed below.
1. Give the correct formula to get the average grade of Emmanuel in Science from Grade 1 to
Grade 6.
2. Give the correct formula to get the average grade of Emmanuel in Math from Grade 5 and
Grade 6.
3. Give the correct formula to get the average grade of Emmanuel in English from Grade 1 to
Grade 4.
4. Give the correct formula to get the grade of Emmanuel in Math when he was in Grade 6.
5. Give the correct formula to get the grade of Emmanuel in English when he was in Grade 2.

In summary, the following are the purposes and syntax of AVERAGEIF and VLOOKUP:
The AVERAGEIF function calculates the average of the numbers in a range that meet the supplied
criteria. Criteria can be supplied as numbers, strings, or references.
The VLOOKUP function looks for something in a range of cells; then it returns that something that’s
in the same row as the value you’re looking for in a datasheet that is listed vertically.
