Painting a wall at school

At our school, our playground looked a bit boring, so our teachers asked everyone for ideas to
make it look more exciting. One student had a great idea: we could all paint pictures on one of
the school walls.
Each class did a different section of the wall on a different day. One class chose to paint
children playing, and another class chose to paint a rainbow. My class decided to paint
dinosaurs for our section. First, we had to draw the dinosaurs on pieces of paper. Next, we
decided where to put all the different dinosaurs on the wall. Then we went outside into the
playground and started painting our huge picture on the wall.
I painted a big dinosaur, a Brachiosaurus, eating leaves from a tall tree. Another student in my
class painted a Tyrannosaurus Rex. That was my favourite. Now the wall is finished, it looks
amazing and really colourful, and it makes us all feel happy, even when it’s raining!

Example:

0 The teachers liked the playground. F

21 Painting a wall was a student’s idea. [1]

22 Everyone in the school painted dinosaurs. [1]

Reading 2
Read the text and the questions below. For each question circle the correct answer.

Running and picking up rubbish

My name’s Luke. I’m eleven years old and I live in Brighton, a city in England. All my family
love sport and we like going running together on Saturday afternoons.
Brighton is on the coast, and people love coming here to swim and play games on the
beach. When they go home, some people leave rubbish like plastic bottles, paper or cans
behind. It makes me angry because if this rubbish goes into the sea, it’s dangerous for fish
and anything else that lives in the water. Some people say that 80% of the plastic in the
world’s oceans comes from rubbish that people threw away on land.
So we decided that we should do something to help with this problem. Now, when my
parents, my sister and I go running, each of us carries a plastic bag. When we see any
rubbish on the ground, we stop and pick it up. We always wear gloves to protect our
hands. There’s usually some rubbish in the street, and the park that we run through, but
most of it is on the beach. Then, when we get home, we empty our bags and recycle the
cans, plastic, paper and glass. We use the same plastic bags every time we go running, of
course!

Example:

0 How often do Luke and his family go running?

a every day
b every week
c every month

26 Why is Luke upset about the rubbish on the beach? [1]

a He’s worried about sea animals.
b He thinks it should be in the sea.
c He’s scared it’s dangerous for him.

27 How many plastic bags do Luke’s family take with them? [1]
a 1
b 2
c 4

28 Why do Luke’s family wear gloves when they’re running? [1]

a so their hands don’t get cold
b so they don’t hurt themselves
c so they don’t drop the rubbish
