Rules
1. These rules may be called MAHATMA GANDHI UNIVERSITY YOUTH FESTIVAL RULES 2019.
o a) “Act” means Mahatma Gandhi University Act, 1985, with subsequ ent amendments.
o b) “College” means any educational institution maintained by, or affiliated to, the Mahatma Gandhi University.
3. Maximum number of individual item s, allowed for one student to participate is strictly limited to 5 (five).
5. For the group items, each college can send only one team. Each college is allowed to participate o nly in a maximum of
6 (six) group items, out of 11 (eleven) group items in the competitions. (One Act Play is excluded from the group items.
Each college is allowed to send their one act play team separately.
6. Any complaint regarding the selection of candidates for the University Youth Festival shall be referred to the Committee
and the decision of the Committee shall be final.
7. The entry forms should contain the name, class, address, mobile phone number and Email id of the competitors. For
the group items, names of all the participants shall be furnished.
8. Every participant, including the members of the group items shall bring their College Identity Cards to participate in the
youth festival and the Professor-in-charge of the contingent should have an authorization letter signed by the Principal of
the concerned college with him to meet any urgent situation.
9. The date and venue of the Youth festival shall be fixed by the Mahatma Gandhi University Union in consultation with
the Vice-Chancellor.
10. The General Secretary of the Mahatma Gandhi University Union shall be the General Convener of the Youth festival.
MUSICAL EVENTS
5. Judgment will be made on the qualities like Swara, Tal, Composition, General impression etc.
5. Sufficient thought and care must be exercised in the choice of raga and composition.
6. Judgment will be based on the qualities like Swara, Tal, selection of Raga, composition and general impression.
5. Judgment will most likely be based on the qualities like Tal, Composition, Nadam, Rhythm,Sruthi, General impression etc.
2. a) For Western: Wind instruments of Western origin like Harmonium, Accordion, Clarinet, Saxophone, Organ etc are to be
used.(Clarification:- Electronically operated Keyboard is not coming under the category of wind instrument).
b) For Eastern: Wind instruments of Indian origin or instruments of Western origin adopted to the Indian Raga System are
allowed. (For eg. Harmonium,Pullankuzhal, Banzoori, Nadhaswaram etc.)
5. Wind instrument (Eastern) can be presented in either Hindustani/Karnatic Style and the Wind instrument (Western) should
be presented in any of the Western Styles.
6. Judgment will most likely be based on the qualities like Swara, Tal, Composition, Selection of Raga (Indian), Rhythm,
emotion, originality and general impression.
3. Judgment will most likely be based on the qualities like Tal, Composition, Nadam, Kalapramanam, Manodharma, General
impression etc.
4. Eastern Instruments: Indian Chenda / Tabala/ Pakkavaj / Mridangam/ Ghatam /Thavil / Edekka/Maddalam/ Ganjira etc.
5. Western: Triple Drum, Jazz, etc. (Clarification:-Instruments like electronically operated Rhythm Pad are not coming under
this category).
5. Judgment will be made on the qualities like composition, rhythm, co -ordination and General impression etc.
2. Maximum number of singers in a group can be six. Maximum number of participants playing instruments (non -singers) shall
be 3. In addition, singers are also allowed to play instruments.
4. The Group song should be taken from Indian songs which can be in any regional language.
6. Maximum time allowed for the group song is 10 minutes, excluding setting time.
7. The setting time for a group song shall not exceed 5 minutes.
8. Judging of this item will be on the basis of quality of singing only and not on make -up, costumes and actions of the team.
Sruthi, Tal, Rhythm, Harmony etc. will be considered for the judgment.
3. Only students are allowed in the team as participants (singers/non -singers playing instruments).
5. Maximum time allowed for the group song is 10 minutes, which does not include setting time.
7. Judging of this item will be on the basis of quality of singing only and not on makeup,Costumes, and actions of the team.
Dance Events
KATHAKALI
1. Each participant will be allowed up to 15 minutes including time for preparatio n,exit, etc.
3. Judgment will be based basically on qualities like Bhavabhinayam, Tal, Mudra, Kalasam, Body
movements,Originality,costume, technicality, Abhinaya of expression and general impression.
BHARATHANATYAM
1. Each participant will be allowed up to 15 minutes including time for preparation, exit etc.
2. Maximum four accompanists are permissible at Inter Zone and only CD is permitted at Zonal level.
3. Judgment will be based basically on the qualities like Tal , Technique, Rhythm, Abhinaya or expression, costume, footwork,
general impression etc.
MOHINIYATTAM
1. Each participant will be allowed up to 15 minutes including time for preparation, exit etc.
2. Maximum four accompanists are permissible at Inter Zone and only CD is permitted at Zonal level.
3. Judgment will be based basically on the qualities like Tal, Technique, Rhythm, Abhinaya or expression, costume, footwork,
general impression etc.
2. The Dance can be either primitive or a folk dance but not a classical one.
4. Judgment will be based on the basis of Rhythm, Formation, Expression, Costumes, Make-up, Sets, and over-all effect.
2. The team may consist of all boys, all girls or a mixture of both.
5. Judgment will be based on the basis of Rhythm, Formation, Expression, Costumes, Make - up, Sets, and Over-all effect.
MARGAMKALI
1. Maximum number of participants allowed is Ten (10).
3. The team may consist of all boys, all girls or a mixture of both.
5. Judgment will be based on the basis of Rhythm, Formation, Expression, Costumes, Make - up, Sets, and Over-all effect.
THIRUVATHIRAKALI
1. Maximum number of participants allowed is Ten (10).
3. The team may consist of all boys, all girls or a mixture of both.
5. Judgment will be based on the basis of Rhythm, Formation, Expression, Costumes, Make - up, Sets, and Over-all effect.
OPPANA
1. Maximum number of participants allowed is Ten (10).
3. The team may consist of all boys, all girls or a mixture of both.
5. Judgment will be based on the basis of Rhythm, Formation, Expression, Costumes, Make - up, Sets, and Over-all effect.
2. Each participant will be allowed up to 15 minutes including time for preparation, exit etc.

KERALANATANAM
1. Each participant will be allowed up to 15 minutes including time for preparation, exit etc.
3. Judgment will be based basically on the qualities like Tal, Technique, Rhythm, Abhinaya or e xpression, costume, footwork,
general impression etc.
DUFFMUTTU
1. Maximum number of participants allowed is Ten (10).
4. Judgment will be based on the basis of the „baith‟, Rhythm, percussion and Over -all effect.
KOLKALI
1. Maximum number of participants allowed is Twelve (12).
3. The songs used for Kolkali should be melodious and traditional „Mappilappattu‟.
4. Judgment will be based on the basis of originality of song, rhythm, movements (Maithayam), formation, foot works, and over -
all effect.
LITERARY EVENTS
2. The topic will be given 10 minutes before the start of the competition at Zonal and 20 minutes before Inter Zone. Afte r the
release of the topic, participants will not be allowed to use mobile phone, laptop, to refer the books or to discuss.
4. Reading of the speech is not permitted, but the participant may refer to written points for the speech.
5. Judgment will most likely be based on qualities like correctness of language, clarity of expression, development of the theme
and other rhetorical qualities.
ELOCUTION (HINDI)
1. Maximum time allotted for the item is 5 minutes.
2. The topic will be given 10 minutes before the start of the competition.
4. Reading of the speech is not permitted; but the participant may refer to written points for the speech.
5. Judgment will most likely be based on qualities like correctness of language, clarity of expression, development of the theme
and other rhetorical qualities
4. Judgment will most likely be based on the qualities like the development of the theme,composition, tone, appropriateness of
style, correctness of language, originality and general impression.
5. Judgment will be based on qualities like delineation of Character, plot construction,theme, diction, correctness and style of
language and , general impression.
6. The story shall be original, not copied or condensed in any form from other writings.
5. Judgment will be based on qualities like theme development, diction, imagery, emotion, appropriate use of language,
general impression etc.
6. The poem shall be original and not borrowed or copied from others.
QUIZ
1. There will be a written preliminary round and 5 or 6 teams will be selected for the final.
3. The specific rules regarding evaluation procedure, time to reply a particular a nswer and the type of round will be given
before the actual start of the competition by the Quiz Master.
4. The medium will be English.
AKSHARASLOKAM
1. Time is fixed by the Judges.
2. Judgment will be based on qualities like clarity of language, express ion of ideas, theme, rhythm, tone, sensitivity for quick
response etc.
KAVITHAPARAYANAM (MALAYALAM)
1. Maximum time allowed at Zonal and in Inter Zone is 10 minutes.
2. Judgment will be based on clarity of speech, expression of emotion and ideas, Rhythm, Tone , general impression etc.

KAVIAKELI
1. Time is fixed by the Judges.

FILIM REVIEW
1. The review is to be written on a film screened before the competitors.
KATHAPRASANGAM
1. The Medium is Malayalam.
3. The Judgment will be based on qualities like clarities of language, theme, expression of emotions, the harmony of literature
and singing qualities etc.
THEATRE EVENTS
MONO ACT
1. Time allowed is 5 minutes.
2. Judgment will be based on qualities like ability to act, clarity of language, literary expression, originality, humor, general
impression etc.
MIMICRY
1. Time allowed is 5 minutes.
2. Judgment w ill be based on command of voice, imitative ability, originality, humour and general impression etc.
MIME
1. Mime or Mookabhinayam is acting without words.It is an art which expresses through gestures, postures and Facial
expressions. It portrays ideas, themes or tells a story, through physical movements only.
4. Judgment will most likely be based on qualities like idea,creativity of presentation,use of make -up, costume, music and
general impression.
SKITS
1. Skits is a short play either satirical or humorous in nature.
6. The item will be judged basically on qualities like Theme, work on acting, stage craft, total design and general impression.
4. Duration of the play will be 30 minutes and 10 minutes for stage arrangements.
FINE ARTS
3. Size of the painting will be half imperial size drawing paper i.e., 22 inches X 1 5 inches.
5. Participants should mention their medium (oil, water, poster or pastel) in the entry form.
COLLAGE
1. Item will be conducted on the spot.
3. Participants are requested to bring their own scissors and other materials.
POSTER DESIGNING
1. Item will be conducted On the Spot on the given subject/idea.
CARTOONING
1. Item will be conducted On the Spot on the given subject/idea.
CLAY MODELING
1. Item will be conducted On the Spot on the given subject/idea.
PHOTOGRAPHY
1. Item will be conducted on the spot.
3. Participants can use either DIGITAL or FILM ROLL Camera. Mobile Phone Cameras will not be allowed.
4. Each participant should submit three photographs taken by him/her based on the theme/topic.
5. Photographs will be judged on the basis of content, composition, sensitivity, creativity and style.
6. Both Colour and/or Black &White photographs can be submitted for valuation.
7. The entries should be in original and must not be modified/edited in any manner.
8. The Camera along with Memory Card / Film Roll should be submitted to the Stage Manager for verification / formatting
before the commencement of the competition.
9. Digital cameras of up to 12 Megapixel can be used for the competition. (In case of cameras with higher Megapixels, the
entries must be within the 12 Megapixel size.)
10. In case of digital photographs, the format of the entries should be capable of being tran sferred to a computer without any
compatibility problems.
