Pre-lesson
1. Play a game where the teacher says two words (from the
textbook), one with /æ/ sound, one with a different sound.
2. Pupils stand up when they hear the word with /æ/ and sit down
when the word has no /æ/.
Lesson delivery
3. Write the letter a on the board and ask pupils what it sounds
like.
4. Sing or play the song (if you’re happy and you know it
LEARNING adaptation). Encourage pupils to join in with the /æ/ sound.
OUTLINES 5. Ask pupils to tell you some words with the /æ/ sound. Write the
words on the board.
6. Show pupils how to make a new verse using an /æ/ word If
you’re happy and you know it say ‘apple, apple’ for example.
7. Pupils work in pairs to create new verses and to practise
singing them. Depending on your pupils, you may need to
support them in this.
8. Pairs perform their verses to the class.

(World Wildlife Fund); other local charities the pupils will know). Talk to pupils about what the
organisations do. (HOTS)
Lesson development:-
1. Use the flashcards to pre-teach the vocabulary.
2. Show the pictures from Student’s Book p.115 and ask pupils which vocabulary might belong to
each picture. (21st CA)
3. Pupils listen and read for Activity. Remind pupils to look at the pictures to help them with new
vocabulary.
4. Elicit We can sentences from pupils about other charities you talked about in the pre-lesson
activity.
5. Pupils copy Activity 2 in their exercise book and answer it. (CBA)

ACTIVITY

Pre-lesson
1. Choose an activity from the pre-lesson tasks in Section 3 to review present perfect in questions and
statements.
Lesson delivery
2. Have pupils sit in a circle. This could be on chairs or on the floor, depending on what is most suitable in
your classroom. Show each picture card in turn. Elicit what the picture shows (e.g. swim in the sea/play a
computer game, etc). Pass the card around the circle, pupils should say if they have/haven’t done this
activity.
3. Still in the circle, have pupils ask another pupil in the circle Have you ever…?. The pupil answers and
then asks another pupil the same question. Repeat several times with each card. You could then
introduce several cards at once. Pupils will need to accompany speech with gestures, perhaps, if this
becomes noisy.
4. Hand out the worksheet. Pupils complete the gapped Have you ever…? questions. Ask pupils to write
between one and three extra Have you ever…? questions.
5. Pupils move around the classroom asking each other the questions. They should try to find someone
who answers ‘yes’ to each question. They write the name of the person who says ‘yes’ next to the
question.
6. Pupils return to their desks. They compare their findings with their partner by saying, for example,
Adilah has been camping or Adam has been fishing.

from the previous lesson.

2. Ask pupils What exciting things has she done? Elicit some ideas. Where pupils don’t use the present
perfect, reformulate their answers to the present perfect.
3. Pupils read the sentences in the present perfect about Emma. In pairs, they decide if they are true or
false. Note that the sentences should include examples of ‘has never’ as well as positive sentences.
4. Pupils analyse the new language and complete a gap-fill activity to check their understanding.
5. Pupils focus on irregular verb forms again.
6. Ask pupils, individually, to write at least one more true sentence and at least one more false sentence
about Emma in their notebooks.
7. Pupils exchange their sentences with a partner to read and decide if they are true or false and correct
all false sentences (Step 7 and Step 3).
Post-lesson
Play a game of ‘Slap’ using the verb cards. Small groups spread out a set of verb cards. Say a sentence
about Emma, about you or about pupils using the present perfect. Pupils listen and slap the main verb they
hear.
