_Lesson Topic:_ Photosynthesis

_Grade Level:_ 9th Grade

_Time:_ 60 minutes

_Objectives:_

- Students will be able to define photosynthesis and explain its importance.

- Students will be able to identify the reactants and products of photosynthesis.

- Students will be able to explain the light-dependent and light-independent reactions of

photosynthesis.

_Materials:_

- Diagrams of photosynthesis
- Handouts with equations and formulas

- Whiteboard and markers

- Students' notebooks and pens/pencils

_Procedure:_

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

- Begin the lesson by asking students what they know about photosynthesis.
- Write the definition of photosynthesis on the board: "Photosynthesis is the process
by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from
carbon dioxide and water."

2. Direct Instruction (20 minutes)

- Show students diagrams of photosynthesis, explaining the light-dependent and

light-independent reactions.

- Use the whiteboard to illustrate the equations and formulas of photosynthesis.

3. Guided Practice (15 minutes)

- Distribute the handouts with equations and formulas and have students work in
pairs to complete them.

- Ask students to identify the reactants and products of photosynthesis.

4. Independent Practice (10 minutes)

- Have students write a short essay explaining the importance of photosynthesis in

the ecosystem.

- Ask students to design and draw a diagram illustrating the process of

photosynthesis.

_Assessment:_

- Completed handout with equations and formulas

- Short essay explaining the importance of photosynthesis

- Diagram illustrating the process of photosynthesis

_Extension:_

- Have students research and create a presentation about the importance of

photosynthesis in different ecosystems.

- Ask students to design and conduct an experiment to measure the rate of

photosynthesis in different plants.
