Atomic Structure – Isotopes

A Mass Spectrometer measures the relative
atomic masses of atoms based on their
ability to withstand a magnetic force. Each
atom is made into a positive ion (cation) and
then is accelerated (by negative charges) in
an evacuated tube. The positive beam of ions
that you are testing is then subjected to a
magnetic field that is attracted to the positive
ions. The ions that are heavier are less
affected then the ions that lighter thus the
lighter atoms move more on the detector.
The distances between the heavier and
lighter ions are ratios that give relative mass.

For example H in the illustration moves
3
three times as far as H .
H is 3 times heavier than H1!

1. Here are three isotopes of an element: C C C
Determine the subatomic particles:

Protons

Electrons

Neutrons

2. A tall chemistry teacher uses the following categories to determine the quarter grade in his class: 60%
of all Test grades, 30% of all Lab grades, and 10% of all Quiz grades. If a student has a Test average of
70, a lab average of 80, and a quiz average of 90, what is the student’s quarter grade?

3. Naturally occurring sulfur (S) consists of three isotopes that have a mass of 32, 33, and 34 atomic mass
units (amu). Sulfur - 32 has an abundance of 95.02% , Sulfur – 33 has an abundance of .79%, and Sulfur –
34 has an abundance of 4.19 %.

4. Strontium consists of four isotopes with masses of 84 (abundance 0.50%), 86 (abundance of 9.9%), 87
(abundance of 7.0%), and 88 (abundance of 82.6%). Calculate the atomic mass of strontium.
