Task 4.1 „Adapt section 3.

4 Tourism from the Scheme of Work to be relevant to your learners“

Topic: Tourism
Learning objectives:
i. Define tourism, explain its different types (e.g., leisure, business, eco-tourism) and its
importance for the global economy
ii. Describe and explain the growth of tourism in relation to the main attractions of the
physical and human landscape
iii. Analyse the benefits and disadvantages of tourism to receiving areas
iv. Demonstrate an understanding of careful management
Assessment:
 Formative Assessment: class participation, group discussions, case studies, and role-play
exercises
 Summative Assessment: final project or report on a tourism destination, analyzing its
impacts and proposing solutions for sustainability
Resources:
i. Textbooks on Geography (Essential Geography)
ii. Online articles, case studies, and tourism reports
iii. Documentaries or video clips related to tourism's impact
Activities:
i. Group Discussion: For example, what types of tourism exist in your local area? What are
the key attractions? “Tourism is always beneficial to a country's economy.” Agree or
disagree? Advantages and disadvantages of tourism. How can tourism adapt to the
challenges of the 21st century (e.g., climate change, pandemics)?
ii. Data Analysis: Review real-world data on the economic impact of tourism in a specific
country or region
iii. Case Study: Examine a tourism site (e.g., Adamawa, Ogun and Jos) and discuss the
social, cultural, natural challenges it faces due to tourism.
iv. Group Work: Develop a proposal for sustainable tourism practices for a specific tourist
area
v. Role-play: Simulate a situation where a local community debates the prosperities and

Extension Activities:
 Field Trip: Visit a local tourist destination and analyze its tourism practices, impacts, and
management strategies.
 Guest Speakers: Invite professionals from the tourism industry (e.g., travel agents, tour
guides, environmental consultants) to speak to the class consequences of tourism
development in their area
Activities that would work and why:
 Group discussion  Students like to discuss, it is an active learning method that
develops students' communication competence. In addition, it teaches how to select
facts and argue them, which also develops critical thinking and the art of eloquence
 Data analysis  data reaches us every day and allows us to better understand the
scale of the phenomenon. Practice shows that students have this skill
 Case study  Allows you to analyze a specific area from various aspects. Therefore,
it allows to touch on a more detailed analysis of examples and develops critical
thinking
 Field trip (50/50) Students love to travel and it is clear that learning outside the
school environment develops their competences and increases their motivation to
learn. Students have a better understanding of the environment.
Activities that would not work and why:
 Field trip  it is interesting, but it requires a lot of time to prepare and go to the
research
 Role-play  this method requires motivated students. A lack of student motivation is
often seen. And students have different levels of knowledge, for example, some
understand the context very well, while others lack knowledge very much
The activities are designed to engage students in critical thinking, real-world analysis, and
creativity while also preparing them for future challenges in the tourism industry.
QUESTIONS:
What changes would you make to use the Cambridge Scheme of Work for this topic with your
learners? Why are you making these changes?
Even though this scheme seems clear to me, the only thing I could change is probably adding
field trip to it as this would give a lasting memory of the topic to the students.

What resources would you use?

Online articles, case studies, and tourism reports. Local tourism organizations' websites for
research. Internet sources:

How would you ensure that you encouraged your class to become independent learners?
I give individual assignments to each student and also request for presentations. Students can
also work in groups contributing their own ideas
What other activities do you know that would work well for this topic area?
Field trip would be a perfect activity that would stimulate the students to want work and carry
out any activity given to them in this topic
