ECI 2205 CONTROL SYSTEMS 1: 45 Contact Hours

Prerequisite AMA 2203 ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS III

Purpose
This course is meant to enable the student to compare and contrast open and closed systems and
represent practical systems with transfer functions

Aims and Objectives


By the end of this Unit the student should able to:
1. Compare and contrast open and closed loop system
2. Simplify control system block diagram and convert block diagrams to flow diagrams
3. Simplify system loops and explain the need for systems modeling
4. Derive transfer functions for simple networks and determine their transfer functions and
represent practical systems with transfer functions.

Course Content
Control system terms, open and closed loop system,
Block diagrams; block diagrams to flow diagrams, Simplification of system loops. Need for
modeling, Deriving transfer functions for simple networks: Electrical, Mechanical, (S), j, D
operations;
Presentation of practical systems: Generators and Motors, RPC systems, Temperature control
systems, Solving problem with given data. Description of test signals: Step, Velocity,
Acceleration and Sinusoidal. Explanation of dynamic response for 1 st and 2nd order systems:
Response terms, Standard 2nd order equation, Response graphs, Derive dimensional 2 nd order
equation Analyzing damping methods, Velocity feedback, Error rate, Viscous damping,
Effects of damping ratio and Calculations of limiting values
