1. INTRODUCTION
Geo-Excel Consultants Sdn Bhd has been engaged by Denprima Sdn. Bhd. to
perform geotechnical engineering assessments and prepare a Geotechnical
Assessment Report for the abovementioned project.
1
investigations were carried out and are believed to be reported accurately.
2. SITE INFORMATION
The proposed site is located on Lot 2521 and PT 50015, Seksyen 41, Jalan Raja
Abdullah / Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. Figure A.1a in Appendix A show
the site key plan & site location plan whilst Figure A.1b in Appendix A shows
the aerial view of the site. The site is accessible via Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan
Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Dewan Sultan Sulaiman. The total land area of
the site is approximately 1.246 acre or 5,042.38 m2.
Figure A.2 in Appendix A shows the land survey plan of the site. The site had
been cleared by previous constructions, and is now used as temporary quarters
for workers. The site altitude relative to the Mean Sea Level falls within RL 29.61
m and RL 33.23 m.
2
Existing secant pile walls with vertical built-up reinforced concrete (RC) retaining
walls on top of the secant pile walls are found along the northern, western and
southern sides of the proposed site. The existing secant pile walls will be used as
the carpark basement walls for this development. The existing secant pile walls
are assessed and discussed in Section 6 of this report.
On the other hand, a two-tiered reinforced soil wall is found along the eastern
side of the proposed site. The reinforced soil wall will be demolished for
construction of the proposed three levels of carpark basement.
The site photographs taken during the site reconnaissance are shown in
Appendix B.
3. SITE GEOLOGY
Figure A.3 in Appendix A shows the geological map extracted from “Peta
Geologi Semenanjung Malaysia” published by the Jabatan Mineral dan Geosains
Malaysia.
According to the geological map, the site is underlain by the Kuala Lumpur
Limestone Formation of middle upper Silurian age. Kuala Lumpur Limestone
Formation is well-known for its highly erratic karstic features, e.g. irregular
bedrock levels, floaters, overhangs, cavities, etc.
4. SOIL INVESTIGATION
The soil investigation works were performed by Pacific Geoscience (M) Sdn. Bhd.
from 26 July 2008 to 25 September 2008. The soil investigation details and
testing results are presented in the Soil Investigation Factual Report entitled
“Report of Proposed Vision City Mixed Development Consisting of 1 Block of 6-
Storey Retail Center, 1 Block of Office Tower, 1 Block of Residential Tower and 4
3
Levels of Basement Carpark on Lot 2520-2523, Section 41, Kuala Lumpur
Wilayah Persekutuan, Volume 1 (Geophysical Report)” dated September 2008
prepared by Pacific Geoscience (M) Sdn. Bhd.
4.1 Boreholes
The subsurface conditions exhibited from BH1 to BH13 can be broadly classified
as:
(a) Subsoil 1 (SPT-N 15), which consists of mainly Silty SAND, and
occasionally Clayey SAND and Sandy GRAVEL. The thickness of Subsoil 1
varies from 7.27 m to 23.30 m above the limestone bedrock.
4
4.3 Bedrock
Limestone floaters of 0.3 m to 0.5 m in vertical height are found in BH7, BH8 and
BH10.
Based on the descriptions of the rock core samples given in the Soil Investigation
Factual Report, the limestone bedrock had experienced different degrees of
weathering, inclusive of fresh rock, slightly weathered, moderately weathered,
and highly weathered at different locations and depths. According to the
classification system given in Table 2 below, which is reproduced from Figure 19
5
of BS 5930:1999 (Code of Practice for Soil Investigations), the limestone bedrock
can be graded as Grade I (Fresh) to Grade IV (Highly weathered).
The Rock Quality Designation (RQD) values of the rock core samples are
summarized in Table 3 below, and plotted in the simplified engineering borehole
logs in Figure A.5 in Appendix A. A total of 102 rock core samples are
presented in Table 3, and the RQD values of the rock cores range from 0%
(Highly fractured) to 100% (Slightly fractured) with an average value of 70.14%
(Moderately fractured). The summary in Table 3 shows that 7.8% of the rock
cores are highly fractured, 6.9% of the rock cores are fractured, 33.3% of the rock
cores are moderately fractured, and 52.0% of the rock cores are slightly fractured.
In other words, about 14.7% of the rock cores are highly fractured to fractured,
and about 85.3% of the rock cores are moderately fractured to slightly fractured.

4.4 Field Test Results
The field tests carried out in the boreholes during the soil investigation include the
Standard Penetration Tests (SPT), which were carried out in accordance with
Test No.19, BS 1377:1999. SPT were carried out in soils at every 1.5 m interval
in each borehole. The SPT-N values are plotted next to the borehole profiles in
Figure A.5 in Appendix A. In general, the SPT-N values are less than 15 with
some localized SPT-N values greater than 50.
The laboratory tests were carried out in accordance with BS 1377:1990 (Methods
of Test for Soils for Civil Engineering Purposes).
Based on Figure A.6 to Figure A.7 in Appendix A, and the British Soil
Classification System given in Table 4 below, which is reproduced from Table 13
of BS 5930:1999 (Code of Practice for Soil Investigations), the subsoils can be
generally classified as Silty SAND.

Table 8 below summarizes the results of the chemical tests performed on the soil

Huang et al. (2009) proposed a system for classifying organic soils which is
based on the percentage of organic matter present: soils with organic content
<3% are termed mineral soils; if the organic content is >3% and <15%, soils are
classified as mineral soils with organics; when the organic content exceeds 15%
but is <30%, the term organic soil is employed. Finally, soils with organic content
higher than 30% are termed highly organic soils or peats. The organic contents in
Table 8 below are all less than 3%, thus the subsoils can be classified as
mineral soils.
The pH values of the subsoils are in the range of 5.4 to 6.1 with an average of
5.66, indicating that the subsoils are mildly acidic (pH > 5.5) to acidic (pH = 2.5 to
5.5). According to BRE Special Digest 1:2005 “Concrete in aggressive ground”,
mildly acidic mobile groundwater can attack concrete significantly, but the rate of
attack is generally slow if the acids are primarily organic in origin. The contents of
chloride and sulphate in the subsoils are very low (<0.01%) and negligible.
According to the Aggressive Chemical Environment for Concrete (ACEC)
Classification System, the ground is classified as AC-2z. The corresponding
Design Chemical (DC) Class of concrete is DC-2z, in which the maximum free-
water/cement ratio is 0.55, and minimum cement content is 320 kg/m3 for
maximum aggregate size of 20 mm. Portland cement can be used for DC Class
of DC-2z.
The pH value, chloride content and sulphate content are useful information to the
C&S Engineer in assessing the degradation risks to the proposed mass concrete,
reinforced concrete and steel structures in the ground. The chemical test results
shall be made known to the C&S Engineer for the relevant C&S designs.

5. UNDERGROUND WATER
18
limestone bedrock, likely form a cut-off wall to prevent groundwater flow into the
cofferdam.
The depths of the groundwater outside the existing secant pile wall cofferdam
range from 3.77 m (BH12) to 5.47 m (BH10) below the ground level with an
average depth of 4.35 m. The groundwater levels vary from RL 26.49 m (BH13)
to RL 25.53 m (BH10) with an average level of RL 26.14 m.
The existing secant pile walls, in combination with different multilevel ground
anchor systems, were originally designed by others to support the required
excavations to RL 17.5 m for construction of the previously proposed 4 levels of
carpark basement.
It is intended to use the existing secant pile walls, in combination with a top-down
construction system (which replaces the previously proposed multilevel ground
anchor systems), to support the required excavations to RL 22.24 m for
construction of the presently proposed 3 levels of carpark basement. Assessment
of the existing secant pile walls is therefore required for this project.
19
6.1 Available Documents
The following documents are made available for the assessment of the existing
secant pile walls:
(a) “Geotechnical Report for Proposed Vision City Mixed Development (Office
Tower) on Lot 2520-2523, Section 41, Kuala Lumpur Wilayah Persekutuan”
dated October 2008 prepared by SSP Geotechnics Sdn Bhd (SSPG).
(b) As-built Drawings of Secant Pile Walls (extracted from the aforementioned
SSPG’s Geotechnical Report). The as-built drawings are attached in
Appendix C1, and tabulated in Table 10 below.
The existing secant pile walls relevant to this project involve Piles No. P683 to
P935. The available as-built layout plan and elevation views are shown in
Appendix C1, and reproduced in Figures C.2a to C.2c in Appendix C2 for
clearer view.
There are six types of secant pile wall, referred to as BM-I, BM-II, BM-III, BM-VI,
DM-1 and DM-2, which correspond to six different multilevel ground anchor
systems. Table 11 below summarizes the available information about the secant
pile walls.
20
Table 11. Summary of As-Built Information of Secant Pile Walls

of different levels ranging from RL 25.0 m to RL 11.0 m.
Main Reinforcement Not known, to be confirmed in detailed design.
Helical Link Reinforcement Not known, to be confirmed in detailed design.
Concrete Grade Not known, to be confirmed in detailed design.
It can be seen from the elevation view in Figure C.2c that Wall Types BM-I and
DM-2 are deeper walls corresponding to deeper limestone bedrock levels ranging
from RL 20.0 m to RL 11.0 m. On the other hand, Wall Types DM-1, BM-II, BM-III,
and BM-VI are shallower walls corresponding to shallower limestone bedrock
levels ranging from RL 25.0 m to RL 20.0 m.
The main reinforcements and helical link reinforcements of the existing secant
pile walls are not known at the time of preparing this report, and shall be checked
and verified on site in the detailed design. Figures C.2a and C.2b show the six
selected pile points (i.e. one pile point for each of Wall Types BM-I, BM-II, BM-III,
BM-VI, DM-1 and DM-2) for checking and verifying their reinforcement details in
the detailed design.
The original design of the secant pile walls was to support the previously
proposed basement excavation to RL 17.5 m. In general, 3 levels of ground
anchors (see Wall Types BM-I, BM-II, DM-1 and DM-2) were provided if the
limestone bedrock was lower than RL 23.0 m. On the other hand, if the limestone
bedrock was higher than RL 23.0 m, 3 levels of rock bolts were introduced to
replace the ground anchors in rock (see Wall Types BM-III and BM-IV).
On top of the capping beam of the secant pile wall, there is an existing built-up
reinforced concrete (RC) retaining wall extended vertically from top of the
capping beam. The height of the vertical built-up RC retaining wall ranges from
2.0 m to 4.0 m. The C&S Engineer shall assess the structural aspects of the built-
up RC retaining wall to ensure its adequacy as a permanent retaining wall.
21
6.3 Independent Analysis of Existing Secant Pile Wall
Since the main reinforcements and helical link reinforcements of the existing
secant pile walls are not known for the time being, independent analysis is
performed to estimate the bending moment and shear force envelopes of the
existing secant pile wall corresponding to the original design.
The finite element software PLAXIS is used to model and predict the behaviours
of the existing secant pile wall for the previously proposed basement excavations
to RL 17.5 m. The following are adopted and assumed in the finite element
analysis:
15-node triangular element type is used to model the soil and limestone
bedrock.
5-node beam element type is used to model the secant pile wall.
The bottom boundaries of the finite element mesh are assumed to be fully
restrained from vertical and horizontal motions, whereas the vertical
boundary of the finite element mesh is assumed to be fixed horizontally but
free to move vertically.
The maximum permissible live load behind the secant pile wall is 10 kPa.
The secant piles are 900 mm in diameter and spaced at 1.5 m c/c.
22
The concrete grade of the existing secant pile walls is assumed to be G35.
All secant piles are embedded at least 1.5 m into the limestone bedrock.
The groundwater level behind the secant pile wall is assumed to be RL 27.0
m.
The adopted soil and rock parameters are given in Table 12 below. The
adopted soil and rock parameters are generally derived based on the soil
investigation results discussed in Section 4 of this report, as well as the
engineering judgement and previous experience of the Geotechnical
Engineer on the similar soil types elsewhere.
The adopted structural properties of the secant pile wall and ground anchors
are given in Tables 13a and 13b below, respectively.

The details and results of the independent finite element analysis are presented
in Appendix C3, and the important results are summarized in Table 14 below.
The actual main reinforcements and helical link reinforcements of the existing
secant pile walls shall be checked and verified on site in the detailed design.
7. EARTHWORK
24
7.1 Excavated Rock Quantity
From the results of the deep exploratory boreholes, as-built information of the
existing secant pile walls, and the presently proposed basement level, rock
excavations are anticipated in the earthwork. Figure D.2 in Appendix D shows
the estimated locations of anticipated rock excavations. The crudely estimated
rock excavation volume is about 400 m3.
The drainage design for the proposed site will be provided in the submission
by the C&S Engineer. The location and details of silt trap are contained therein.
It is intended to use the existing secant pile walls (Piles No. P683 to P935) in
combination with a top-down construction system to support the required
excavations to RL 22.24 m for construction of the presently proposed 3 levels of
carpark basement.
25
Figure D.2 in Appendix D shows the elevation views of the existing secant pile
wall, which are produced from the available as-built information given in Figures
C.1g to C.1i in Appendix C1.
Figure D.3 in Appendix D shows the typical section and details of the secant pile
wall adopted for geotechnical analysis and design. The maximum retained height
of the secant pile wall is about 10.9 m in the presently proposed excavations to
RL 22.24 m. The secant pile walls will act as permanent basement walls upon
completion of the basement construction.
The finite element software PLAXIS is used to model and predict the behaviours
of the secant pile wall in combination with a top-down construction system for the
presently proposed basement excavations to RL 22.24 m. The following are
adopted and assumed in the finite element analysis:
15-node triangular element type is used to model the soil and limestone
bedrock.
5-node beam element type is used to model the secant pile wall.
The maximum permissible live load behind the secant pile wall is 10 kPa.
The secant piles are 900 mm in diameter and spaced at 1.5 m c/c.
The concrete grade of the existing secant pile walls is assumed to be G35.
All secant piles are embedded at least 1.5 m into the limestone bedrock.
The groundwater level behind the secant pile wall is assumed to be RL 28.0
m.
The adopted soil and rock parameters are given in Table 12 above.
The adopted structural properties of the secant pile wall are given in Table
13a above.
The adopted structural properties of the floor slab struts and steel struts are
given in Table 15 below.
The adopted calculation phases in the finite element analysis are described
in Table 16 below.
27

4 Construct B1 Slab Strut / Steel Struts, and Excavate to RL 25.8 m
5 Construct B2 Slab Strut / Steel Struts, and Excavate to RL 22.1 m
6 Construct B3 Slab Strut
The details and results of the finite element analysis are presented in Appendix
E, and the important results are summarized in Tables 17 and 18 below.
As can be seen from Table 17, the estimated maximum horizontal displacement
of the secant pile wall is about 26 mm. Compared to the results of independent
analysis on the original design of the secant pile wall in Table 14 above, the
estimated maximum bending moments and shear forces for the top-down
construction system are generally smaller than those of the original design.
Hence the existing secant pile walls in combination with the top-down
construction system should be safe and adequate to support the presently
proposed basement excavations to RL 22.24 m.
The actual main reinforcements and helical link reinforcements of the existing
secant pile walls shall be checked and verified on site in the detailed design. The
design of the secant pile wall in combination with the top-down construction
system shall be reviewed in the detailed design once the actual reinforcements
are confirmed.

9. BUILDING FOUNDATIONS
Bored pile foundations are recommended for the proposed buildings. Pile
foundations shall be designed in accordance with BS 8004 (Code of Practice for
Foundations).
Bored piles are designed to be embedded in the limestone bedrock for the
proposed buildings at this project site. The bored pile designs in this project
consider only the pile shaft resistance and pile base resistance in the limestone
bedrock, and ignore the pile shaft resistance in the subsoils.

Five diameters of bored pile, i.e. 900 mm, 1200 mm, 1500 mm, 1650 mm and
1800 mm, are proposed in the bored pile designs. The proposed pile working
loads in axial compression, and the required bored pile lengths are tabulated in
Table 20 below. The calculations of the geotechnical axial compression
capacities of bored piles are given in Appendix F. The typical details of the
proposed bored piles are shown in Figure D.5 in Appendix D.
Crushing of test cubes for measuring the strength of concrete used in the bored
piles shall be carried out at 7- and 28 days of age. The required characteristic
strength at 28 days of age is 45 N/mm2.
30
It is important to highlight that the building structures and foundations shall be
designed to resist the lateral loads and bending moments induced by the axial
strut loads given in Table 18 above as a result of using the floor slabs of Ground
Floor (GF), Basement 1 (B1), Basement 2 (B2) and Basement 3 (B3) to prop the
secant pile walls.

Notes:
(1) The proposed pile working loads and rock socket lengths shall be verified by
adequate pile load tests.
(2) The proposed pile working loads are for axial compression loading only.
(3) The main reinforcements for piles subject to axial compressions only shall be at least
0.5% of the pile cross-sectional area. For piles subject to bending moments, the main
reinforcements to be provided shall be referred to Table 2 of Figure D.5 in Appendix
D.
(4) The reinforcement length for piles subject to axial compressions only shall be at least
12 m (inclusive of the required anchorage to pilecap). For piles subject to bending
moments, reinforcements for full pile length shall be provided.
For payment purpose of the bored piling work, rock shall be defined as material
where:
(a) In the opinion of the Engineer will require a rotary drilling rig equipped with
rock tools as described below for advancing the pile boring. All equipment,
machinery, tools, and rigs to be in good condition and operated efficiently by
experienced personnel skilled in the use of the equipment.
Rotary drilling rig with a torque of not less than 140 kNm with a
lockable kelly bar and with a push down force of not less than 150 kN.
Rock tools in the form of core barrels, rock augers and/or rock coring
buckets equipped with multiple projecting tungsten carbide teeth or
roller bits; or chisels; or a combination of both.
31
(b) And when more than 50% of the material brought to the surface by the rock
tools contains rock fragments (classified as Grades I and/or II of the
weathering profiles following the classification scheme given in “Guide to
Rock and Soil Description" published by the Geotechnical Control Office,
Hong Kong) with sharp edges, or rock that has been grinded to sand size
with temperatures higher than ambient. The temperatures at the tungsten
carbide teeth are also higher than ambient. Hand-held rock specimen
requires more than one firm blow to break with a geological hammer. The
advance rate of rock coring is generally less than 600 mm per hour.
(c) The rock material shall be verified by carrying out point load tests on at least
three representative excavated rock samples obtained from not more than
0.5 m thick rock excavation to achieve minimum point load strength index of
3.0 MPa, subject to site confirmation on typical rock lump sizes based on the
size correction factor, F = (De/50)0.45 where De is the equivalent core
diameter in mm.
(d) Any other materials that do not fulfill the definition of rock excavation
mentioned above shall be considered as soil, or equivalent rock excavation
length, as detailed in Table 21 below.
32
It is proposed that at least one fully instrumented preliminary test pile (say 1200
mm diameter) shall be installed for static maintained load test (MLT), using the
kentledge method, prior to installation of the working piles. The preliminary test
pile shall be load tested to 2.5 times the proposed working load or failure,
whichever comes first, to determine the ultimate geotechnical capacity of pile.
The proposed pile working loads and rock socket lengths given in Table 20
above would then be reviewed and revised according to the result of pile load
test(s) where appropriate. Maintained load test shall only be carried out after the
compressive strength of concrete achieves 45 N/mm2.
It is proposed that at least 10% of total working piles, subject to minimum 1 no.
for each diameter of bored pile, shall be selected for PDA tests. PDA tests shall
only be carried out after the compressive strength of concrete achieves 45
N/mm2. The selected working piles shall be load tested to 2.0 times of the
proposed pile working load given in Table 20 above. PDA tests shall be carried
out by a certified PDA tester.
Pile Integrity test (PIT) can be used as a cheap and quick method to grossly
assess the integrity of bored pile. It is proposed that all the installed bored piles to
be tested by PIT. It is also proposed that at least one Koden test shall be
performed for each diameter of bored pile to check the bored pile profile and
verticality. Proof coring tests may be requested to check concrete quality and any
defects suspected in the piles. The proposed pile testing scheme for bored piles is
also described in Figure D.5 in Appendix D.
Pile testing shall be carried out by qualified personnel and witnessed by the
supervising staff from the Consultant/Client. The testing equipment and
measuring apparatus shall be calibrated with valid calibration certificates.
The proposed pile foundations shall meet the following acceptance criteria in the
pile load tests. According to Clause 2.9.6.3 (i) of “Standard Specifications for
33
Building Works” published by JKR Malaysia in 2014, the pile tested is acceptable
if:
(i) The residual settlement after removal of the test load at working load does
not exceed [(diameter of pile or diagonal width for non-circular pile / 120) +
4] mm or 12.5 mm, whichever is the lower value; and
(ii) The total settlement under the Working Load does not exceed 12.5 mm; and
(iii) The total settlement under twice the Working Load does not exceed 38 mm
or 10% of pile diameter / width, whichever is the lower value.
Since the existing ground level is lower than the proposed Ground Floor Level,
the construction of the ground floor slab (which will act as a strutting system to
the secant pile wall in the subsequent basement excavations) will require
temporary scaffolding or staging.
34
Temporary works that could affect the safety and health of workers and public
shall be designed, endorsed and supervised by a Professional Engineer with
Practising Certificate for Temporary Works (PETW) engaged by the Contractor.
Earthwork;

contractors shall be appointed to ensure the QA/QC of the construction works
is fully implemented.
The following method statements, including but not limited to, will be required of
the relevant contractors, and agreed by the Consultant before commencement
of the works:
Earthwork;
Construction of bored pile foundations;

11. MAINTENANCE
36
Depending on the observations, appropriate maintenance shall be carried out
without delay.
It is proposed to carry out the regular inspections monthly during the construction
stage, and once in every 6 months after completion of the project. An inspection
report shall be produced after completion of each inspection with a list of required
maintenance works.
37
The approximate locations and typical details of the proposed geotechnical
instrumentation are shown in Figures D.6 in Appendix D.
It is recommended that detailed dilapidation surveys shall be carried out to all the
existing neighbouring buildings and structures prior to commencement of the
proposed construction works.
Table 22 below presents the proposed threshold values and action plans for
geotechnical instrumentation monitoring.
38
13. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
(b) The total land area of the proposed site is approximately 1.246 acre or
5,042.38 m2.
(c) The site had been cleared by previous constructions, and is now used as
temporary quarters for workers. The site altitude relative to the Mean Sea
Level falls within RL 29.61 m and RL 33.23 m.
(d) Existing secant pile walls with vertical built-up reinforced concrete (RC)
retaining walls on top of the secant pile walls are found along the northern,
western and southern sides of the proposed site. The existing secant pile
walls will be used as the carpark basement walls for this development.
(e) A two-tiered reinforced soil wall is found along the eastern side of the
proposed site. The reinforced soil wall will be demolished for construction
of the proposed three levels of carpark basement.
(f) The site is underlain by the Kuala Lumpur Limestone Formation of middle
upper Silurian age.
(g) The soil investigation works were performed by Pacific Geoscience (M)
Sdn. Bhd. from 26 July 2008 to 25 September 2008. The soil investigation
program consists of 13 deep exploratory boreholes referred to as BH1 to
BH13.
(h) The subsurface conditions exhibited from BH1 to BH13 can be broadly
classified as:
39
Subsoil 1 (SPT-N 15), which consists of mainly Silty SAND, and
occasionally Clayey SAND and Sandy GRAVEL. The thickness of
Subsoil 1 varies from 7.27 m to 23.30 m above the limestone bedrock.
Limestone bedrock, which is encountered at different depths ranging
from 7.27 m to 23.30 m below the ground level. The reduced levels of
the limestone bedrock range from RL 22.26 m to RL 8.09 m.
(j) A total of 102 rock core samples are collected, in which 7.8% of the rock
cores are highly fractured, 6.9% of the rock cores are fractured, 33.3% of
the rock cores are moderately fractured, and 52.0% of the rock cores are
slightly fractured.
(l) The pH values of the subsoils are in the range of 5.4 to 6.1 with an
average of 5.66, indicating that the subsoils are mildly acidic (pH > 5.5) to
acidic (pH = 2.5 to 5.5). According to the Aggressive Chemical
Environment for Concrete (ACEC) Classification System, the ground is
classified as AC-2z. The corresponding Design Chemical (DC) Class of
concrete is DC-2z, in which the maximum free-water/cement ratio is 0.55,
and minimum cement content is 320 kg/m3 for maximum aggregate size of
20 mm. Portland cement can be used for DC Class of DC-2z.
(m) The pH value, chloride content and sulphate content are useful information
to the C&S Engineer in assessing the degradation risks to the proposed
mass concrete, reinforced concrete and steel structures in the ground. The
chemical test results shall be made known to the C&S Engineer for the
relevant C&S designs.
40
(n) The depths of the groundwater outside the existing secant pile wall
cofferdam range from 3.77 m (BH12) to 5.47 m (BH10) below the ground
level with an average depth of 4.35 m. The groundwater levels vary from
RL 26.49 m (BH13) to RL 25.53 m (BH10) with an average level of RL
26.14 m.
(o) The crudely estimated rock excavation volume is about 400 m3. Rock
excavation shall be carried out by methods appropriate to the site
requirements as approved by the S.O. If a blasting method is to be
adopted, the relevant safety and security regulations dealing with,
including but not limited to, purchase, transport, handling, storage and
usage of blasting equipment, materials, etc. shall be strictly complied with.
(p) The existing secant pile walls, in combination with different multilevel
ground anchor systems, were originally designed by others to support the
required excavations to RL 17.5 m for construction of the previously
proposed 4 levels of carpark basement. It is intended to use the existing
secant pile walls, in combination with a top-down construction system
(which replaces the previously proposed multilevel ground anchor
systems), to support the required excavations to RL 22.24 m for
construction of the presently proposed 3 levels of carpark basement.
(q) The existing secant pile walls relevant to this project involve Piles No.
P683 to P935. There are six types of secant pile wall, referred to as BM-I,
BM-II, BM-III, BM-VI, DM-1 and DM-2, which correspond to six different
multilevel ground anchor systems.
(r) On top of the capping beam of the secant pile wall, there is an existing
built-up reinforced concrete (RC) retaining wall extended vertically from
top of the capping beam. The height of the vertical built-up RC retaining
wall ranges from 2.0 m to 4.0 m. The C&S Engineer shall assess the
structural aspects of the built-up RC retaining wall to ensure its adequacy
as a permanent retaining wall.
(s) The main reinforcements and helical link reinforcements of the existing
41
secant pile walls are not known at the time of preparing this report, and
shall be checked and verified on site in the detailed design. Figures C.2a
and C.2b in Appendix C2 show the six selected pile points (i.e. one pile
point for each of Wall Types BM-I, BM-II, BM-III, BM-VI, DM-1 and DM-2)
for checking and verifying their reinforcement details in the detailed design.
(v) The finite element software PLAXIS is used to model and predict the
behaviours of the secant pile wall in combination with a top-down
construction system for the presently proposed basement excavations to
RL 22.24 m. The important results are summarized in Tables 17 and 18.
(w) The estimated maximum horizontal displacement of the secant pile wall is
about 26 mm. Compared to the results of independent analysis on the
original design of the secant pile wall in Table 14, the estimated maximum
bending moments and shear forces for the top-down construction system
are generally smaller than those of the original design. Hence the existing
secant pile walls in combination with the top-down construction system
should be safe and adequate to support the presently proposed basement
42
excavations to RL 22.24 m. The design of the secant pile wall in
combination with the top-down construction system shall be reviewed in
the detailed design once the actual reinforcements are confirmed.
(x) It is important to highlight that the building structures and foundations shall
be designed to resist the lateral loads and bending moments induced by
the axial strut loads recommended in Table 18 as a result of using the
floor slabs of Ground Floor (GF), Basement 1 (B1), Basement 2 (B2) and
Basement 3 (B3) to prop the secant pile walls.
(y) Bored piles are designed to be embedded in the limestone bedrock for the
proposed buildings at this project site. The bored pile designs in this
project consider only the pile shaft resistance and pile base resistance in
the limestone bedrock, and ignore the pile shaft resistance in the subsoils.
(z) Five diameters of bored pile, i.e. 900 mm, 1200 mm, 1500 mm, 1650 mm
and 1800 mm, are proposed in the bored pile designs. The proposed pile
working loads in axial compression, and the required bored pile lengths
are tabulated in Table 20. The typical details of the proposed bored piles
are shown in Figure D.5 in Appendix D.
(bb) Temporary works that could affect the safety and health of workers and
public shall be designed, endorsed and supervised by a Professional
Engineer with Practising Certificate for Temporary Works (PETW)
engaged by the Contractor.
(cc) Adequate site supervision staffs from the Consultant/Client and the
43
relevant contractors shall be appointed to ensure the QA/QC of the
construction works is fully implemented.
(ee) It is proposed to carry out the regular inspections monthly during the
construction stage, and once in every 6 months after completion of the
project. An inspection report shall be produced after completion of each
inspection with a list of required maintenance works.
