Tutorial sheet 6

1. An 80 kg block rests on a horizontal plane. Find the magnitude of the force P required to give the block an
acceleration of 2.5 m/s2 to the right. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the plane is
µK = 0.25.

2. Two blocks are joined by an inextensible cable as shown in figure. If the system is released from rest,
determine the velocity of block A after it has moved 2 m. Assume that the coefficient of kinetic friction
between block A and the plane is 0.25 and that the pulley is weightless and frictionless.
3. The 250-lb concrete block A is released from rest in the position shown and pulls the 400-lb log up the 30_
ramp. If the coefficient of kinetic friction between the log and the ramp is 0.5, determine the velocity of the
block as it hits the ground at B.

4. A body weighing 1200 N rests on a rough plane inclined at 12° to the horizontal. It is pulled up the plane
by means of a light flexible rope running parallel to the plane and passing over a light frictionless pulley at
the top of the plane as shown in Fig. The portion of the rope beyond the pulley hangs vertically down and
carries a weight of 800 N at its end. If the coefficient of friction for the plane and the body is 0.2, find:
(a) tension in the rope,
(b) acceleration with which the body moves up the plane, and
(c) the distance moved by the body in 3 seconds after starting from rest.

5. The step pulley shown in Figure starts from rest and accelerates at 2 rad/s2. How much time is required for
block A to move 20 m? Find also the velocities of A and B at that time.
6. A solid cylinder of weight W and radius r rolls down an inclined plane which makes _° with the horizontal
axis. Determine the minimum coefficient of friction and the acceleration of the mass centre for rolling,
without slipping.

7. When the forward speed of the truck shown was 30 ft/s, the brakes were suddenly applied, causing all four
wheels to stop rotating as shown in figure. It was observed that the truck skidded to rest in 20 ft. Determine
the magnitude of the normal reaction and of the friction force at each wheel as the truck skidded to rest.
