Tutorial 1
1. Two forces are applied as shown to a hook support. Knowing that the magnitude of P
is 35 N, determine by trigonometry (a) the required angle α if the resultant R of the
two forces applied to the support is to be horizontal, (b) the corresponding magnitude
of R.
Ans: (α=37.1° & R=73.2 N)
3. The hydraulic cylinder BC exerts on member AB a force P directed along line BC.
Knowing that P must have a 600-N component perpendicular to member AB, determine
(a) the magnitude of the magnitude of the force P, (b) its component along line AB.
(Ans. (a) 621.17 N (b) 160.8 N)

4. Knowing that the tension in rope AC is 365 N, determine the resultant of the three forces
exerted at point C of post BC. (Ans. R = 474 N, angle =32.5°)
5. Two cables are tied together at C and are loaded as shown. Determine the tension (a) in
cable AC, (b) in cable BC. (Ans. TAC = 352 N, TBC = 261 N)
6. A sailor is being rescued using a boatswain’s chair that is suspended from a pulley that
can roll freely on the support cable ACB and is pulled at a constant speed by cable CD.
Knowing that α= 30° andβ= 10° and that the combined weight of the boatswain’s
chair and the sailor is 200 N, determine the tension (a) in the support cable ACB, (b) in
the traction cable CD. (Ans. (a) TACB= 269 N (b) TCD=37 N)

7. Three cables are used to tether a balloon as shown. Determine the vertical force P
exerted by the balloon at A knowing that the tension in cable AD is 481 N. (Ans. P =
926 N)
