1) Set up a simple pendulum using a ring stand, string, and mass. It is important to always use the same
mass in the experiment and to also be able to change the length of the string. (So don’t tie knots you
can’t undo!)
2) Practice pulling the mass back and releasing it to start the pendulum. You will need to always pull
the mass back the same distance in this experiment.
3) Before starting with data collection, choose 6 different string lengths to use. Be sure to choose
lengths that will fit in the space you have with the ring stand. Create a data column for String Length,
and record your string lengths in it.
4) Choose a distance to always pull your mass back when you start the pendulum. Record this value in
the following space:
5) Set up the pendulum for your 1st length. Pull the mass back and measure the time the mass takes to
complete 1 period. Repeat this 3 times. Create 3 Data columns for Periods in your data table and
record the 3 times. Be sure to match these times with the corresponding string length you used
in for that trial.
6) Repeat step 5 for all string lengths. RECORD time (in seconds) for all 3 “period” trials for each string
length in your data table.
7) When finished, create a column in your data table for the Average Period for each string length.
Calculate the Average Period by adding the 3 periods you measured for each mass and divide by
3. Record the Average Period for each string length.
