MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD:

3 topics and construct your own problem:

1 for Age Word Problem

1 for Mixture Problem

1 for Distance, Rate and Time Problem

AGE WORD PROBLEM

Problem:

Five years ago, Peter was twice as old as John. In 5 years, the sum of their ages will be 50. How old are Peter
and John now?

Solution:

1. Define variables.

Let P = Peter's current age, and J = John's current age.

2. Translate the problem into equations:

• From the first sentence: "Five years ago, Peter was twice as old as John"

P-5=2(J-5)

• From the second sentence: "In 5 years, the sum of their ages will be 50".

(P+5)+(J+5)=50

3. Simplify each equation:

• First equation:

P-5=2J-10 → P=2J-5
• Second equation:

P+J+10=50 = P+J=40

4. Substitute P = 2J - 5into P+J = 40:

(2J -5)+J=40

3J-5=40 = 3J=45 = J=15

5. Find P:

Substitute J = 15 into P = 2J -5:

P=2(15)-5=30-5=25

Check the solution:

• Five years ago: Peter = 20, John = 10 (Peter was twice John's age).

• In 5 years: Peter = 30, John = 20 (Sum = 50).

Answer: Peter is 25 years old, and John is 15 years old.

MIXTURE PROBLEM

Problem:

A chemist has two solutions: one is 30% acid and the other is 70% acid. How many liters

Of each solution should be mixed to obtain 40 liters of a 50% acid solution?

Solution:

1. Define variables

Let a = volume of the 30% acid solution, and y = volume of the 70% acid solution

Set up the system of equations.

• Total volume:

x+y=40

• Total acid content:

0.32x + 0.7y = 0.5(40)

3. Simplify the second equation:

0.3x + 0.7y = 20

4. Solve the system of equations:

From the first equation, y = 40 – x. Substitute into the second equation:

0.3x + 0.7(40 -x)=20

0.3x + 28-0.7x = 20

-0.4x + 28 = 20 → -0.4x = -8 → x= 20

5. Find y.

Substitute x = 20 into y = 40

y=40-20=20

Check the solution:

• Acid from 30% solution: 0.3(20) = 6 liters

• Acid from 70% solution: 0.7(20) = 14 liters.
• Total acid: 6 + 14 = 20 liters (matches 50% of 40 liters).

Answer: Mix 20 liters of the 30% solution and 20 liters of the 70% solution.
DISTANCE, RATE AND TIME PROBLEM

Problem:

A car travels 240 miles in total. It travels the first 120 miles at 40 mph and the next 120

Miles at 60 mph. What is the car’s average speed for the entire trip?

Solution:

1.Recall the formula for average speed

Average speed = Total distance / Total time

2.Find the time for each segment of the trip:

• For the first 120 miles at 40 mph:

t1=speeddistance=40120=3hours

Speed For the second 120 miles at 60 mph:

Ty= distance

Speed

: 3 hours

120

3.Find the total time

Total time =ti +t2=3+2=5hours

4.Find the total distance:

Total distance = 120 + 120 = 240 miles

5.Calculate the average speed:

Average speed =

Total distance

Total time

Answer: The car’s average speed for the entire trip is 48 mph.
After answering your own formulated problems. The following questions

Should be answered.

1. How did you fomulate your own problem from the 3 topics mentioned?

Answer: By watching youtube video tutorials and scrolling through the internet and understanding it and also
to be honest, with the help of AI, not gonna lie I pick some ideas from it as well and it helps me understood it
more very well.

2. How did you determine that your own constructed problem is aligned in

The 3 topics mentioned?

Answer: Well, because it mainly talks about the said topics which includes age word problem, mixture
problems and etc., I positively think it is the right one as I compare it as well with your given examples in our
GC.

3. What do you think of the level of difficulty you encountered upon

Constructing the problem?

Answer: I think it’s about right in the middle because the topic itself is already understandable but just the
way you wanna get your solution and answers is kind of a lil bit tricky for me but it’s fun though and it’s good to
way to kill some time, especially for me as an average who’s having a hard time in this subject.

4. How did you arrive at your answers.

Answer: From what I’ve seen on tutorials, I just compare it with my own and see if it aligns and it does.

5. Enumerate the steps you follow upon answering your constructed

Problems.

Answer: First: Analyzing the problem

Second: Solving it step by step

Third: And lastly, checking the answers.

That’s all Thank You.
