TOPIC: PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTION

1. Let 𝑋 be a random variable which assumes values 𝑥1 , 𝑥2 , 𝑥3 , 𝑥4 such that

2𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑥1 ) = 3𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑥2 ) = 𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑥3 ) = 5𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑥4 ). Find the probability
distribution of 𝑋.

2. A bag contains 1 red and 3 white balls. Find the probability distribution of the
number of red balls if 2 balls are drawn at random from the bag one-by-one
without replacement.

3. Four bad oranges are mixed accidently with 16 good oranges. Find the
probability distribution of the number of bad oranges in a draw of two oranges.

4. Find the probability distribution of the maximum of the two scores obtained
when a die is thrown twice. Determine also the mean of the distribution

5. Two cards are drawn successively from a well shuffled pack of 52 cards with
replacement. Find the probability distribution of number of spade cards drawn.

6. There are 5 cards numbered 1 to 5, one number on one card. Two cards are
drawn at random without replacement. Let 𝑋 denote the sum of the numbers
on two cards drawn. Find the mean of 𝑋.

7. A pair of dice is tossed. If the number appearing on the top is less than 3, it is a
success. Find the probability distribution of success.

8. A die is thrown three times. Let 𝑋 be 'number of twos seen'. Find the
expectation of 𝑋

9. Two biased dice are thrown together. For the first die (6) = , the other scores

being equally likely while for the second die, 𝑃(1) = and the other scores are
5
equally likely. Find the probability distribution of ‘the number of ones seen’.

10. Suppose 10,000 tickets are sold in a lottery each for Rs 1. First prize is of Rs
3000 and the second prize is of Rs 2000. There are three third prizes of Rs.500
each. If you buy one ticket, what is your expectation?

𝑋 1 2 4 2A 3A 5A

1 1 3 1 1 1
𝑃(𝑋)
2 5 25 10 25 25

Calculate the value of A if E(X) = 2.94

12. The probability distribution of a random variable 𝑥 is given as under:

𝑘𝑥 2 for 𝑥 = 1,2,3
P(X = 𝑥) = {2𝑘𝑥 for 𝑥 = 4,5,6
0 otherwise
where 𝑘 is a constant. Calculate

(i) E(X) (ii) E(3𝑋 2 ) (iii) P(X ≥ 4)
