INTRODUCTION
More people around the world than ever before are studying and learning English
because it has become the international language of education and business. Our mission at
Educational Testing Service (ETS) is to promote learning and support education and
professional development for people worldwide. We work hard to help learners pursue their
dreams of higher education or getting a good job in English-speaking environments
worldwide.
The popularity of English can be seen in the growing number of people taking the TOEFL®
and TOEIC® tests, the most widely used and accepted English exams in the world. ETS
creates these tests and for this reason, perhaps readers might be interested in our perception
on the importance of learning English and why it should be fun.
DISCUSSION
Motivation is vital, what is learning English for. Learning English is important and
people all over the world decide to study it as a second language. Many countries include
English as a second language in their school syllabus and children start learning English at a
young age.
1. English is the most commonly spoken language in the world. One out of five people
can speak or at least understand English.
2. English is the language of science, of aviation, computers, diplomacy, and tourism.
Knowing English increases your chances of getting a good job in a multinational
company within your home country or of finding work abroad.
3. English is the official language of 53 countries. That is a lot of people to meet and
speak to.
4. English is spoken as a first language by around 400 million people around the world.
5. English is the language of the media industry. If you speak English, you won't need to
rely on translations and subtitles anymore to enjoy your favourite books, songs, films
and TV shows.
6. English is also the language of the Internet. Many websites are written in English –
you will be able to understand them and to take part in forums and discussions.
7. English is based on a simple alphabet and it is fairly quick and easy to learn compared
to other languages.
8. English is not only useful – it gives you a lot of satisfaction. Making progress feels
great. You will enjoy learning English, if you remember that every hour you spend
gets you closer to perfection
9. Since English is spoken in so many different countries there are thousands of schools
around the world that offer programmes in English. If you speak English, there're lots
of opportunities for you to find an appropriate school and course to suit your
academic needs..
10. Because it's fun! By learning English, you will also learn about other cultures. Few
experiences will make you grow as a person more than learning the values, habits and
way of life in a culture that is different from yours.
It’s Now or Never, wait or delay too long till finally have no time left for an action. Don’t
ever think learning EFL is effortless.
Variety of ways :
Keep students on their toes: Or, encourage neuroplasticity, as
the scientists would put it. Introducing new ways of learning will
prevent boredom and prepare students for real-world language
use.
If students can predict what’ll happen day-in, day-out in the
classroom, they’ll go on autopilot and won’t be challenged.
Then, when they actually find themselves in a real foreign
language situation, they’ll be surprised when they can’t adapt as
easily.
Match students’ diverse learning styles: There may also be
students in your class who just don’t vibe with the way you
usually teach. Some students are visual learners, some learn by
doing, etc.
Of course, you’re probably already trying to cater to all of your
students, but most of us just instinctively tend towards certain
styles. Finding new teaching methods will help you keep your
whole classroom engaged.
Keep yourself present: Don’t forget about yourself! If you get
complacent or locked in a routine, it’ll just signal students to
tune out, too. Updating activities and routines is a great way to
keep yourself motivated and present in the classroom.
Practice make perfect. Many people assume this advice is too simple and go back to but
once they find their own way to make conversations fun slowly they notice themselves
learning new things and talking without thinking (and worrying!) so much! This is
easier said than done of course, but as an English teacher their are many ways to keep
lessons engaging. I start by using a wide range of materials in lessons so students don’t
feel like they are back at school with a big text book in front of them.
Also I make sure each English lesson is focusing not just on grammar and techniques of
speaking, but also looks at different conversation techniques and includes role-play
situations (job interview, first date, etc.) – people can relate to these situations and will
find what they learn quite useful in their every-day lives.
When learning English, your ultimate goal should be to feel comfortable when speaking
it to people around you and your teacher can help you do this by giving you plenty of
chances to express yourself. It really becomes apparent when someone has been
practicing or speaking a lot because they are noticeably more relaxed, their vocabulary
is much more intact and within reach, and they have a better ability to explain the ideas
that they want to. Keep going like this and you’ll be fluent in no time.
As far as perfecting grammar and vocabulary, you can have all the knowledge of proper
grammar and a great vocabulary, but if you are out of practice, the words might just not
be there when you want them, and you might slip up on your grammar more than
normal. This is not a huge issue, but I often see people become embarrassed or
apologetic when this happens and then not want to continue speaking as much as they
were before. When you lose confidence in your English abilities you are less likely to
use your English, and therefore fall farther behind. So again I would say my greatest
advice is to practice consistently – either with friends, during work, or even just coming
home and watching your favourite TV shows in English (with subtitles of course).
There is no single way to learn, and certainly no “right” way, but I would say that any
time you can find ways to help yourself enjoy what you learn or approach it in a way
that is interesting, you will always make much more progress
CONCLUSSION
Developing fun situation in the English learning is should be done by the teacher. At
the same time, however, English exists in the world today as a means of international
communication – as a way for people from different social groups to communicate with
each other – and to fulfil this function it would seem that variation in the language needs
to be curtailed to a certain extent. That is to say, if the language becomes too diverse it
will not remain mutually comprehensible across different social groups. So we have two
impulses at work that are seemingly incompatible, or perhaps even in conflict, and the
question we are faced with is how to render them as consistent, as both being part of the
existence of a single entity we call ‘English’. This is one of the central issues in English
language studies today – and it’s a very modern issue because it has come about as a
direct result of the unprecedented position that English now occupies in the world: as a
language with global scope which is implicated in the history and present-day existence
of societies all around the world.
