MATH1341: CALCULUS AND
DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

1 Questions from Gradient (Grad), Divergence

(Div), and Curl
1. Given the scalar field f (x, y, z) = x2 y + yz 2 , calculate the gradient ∇f
and evaluate it at the point (1, −1, 2).
2. For the function f (x, y, z) = exy + sin(z), determine the direction in which
f increases most rapidly at the point (0, 0, π/2).

3. If f (x, y) = x3 − 3xy + 2y 2 , find the rate of change of f in the direction

of the vector a = 2i − j at (1, 1).
4. Calculate the divergence of the vector field F = x2 i + yzj + z 2 k and
interpret the physical significance of your result.

5. Determine whether the vector field G = cos(x)i+sin(y)j+xzk is solenoidal

(i.e., whether ∇ · G = 0).
6. Let F = sin(x)i + cos(y)j + z 2 k. Find ∇ · F and discuss the significance
of its value when x = y = z = 0.
7. Compute the curl of the vector field H = yi + zj + xk and determine
whether H is conservative.
8. Verify if the vector field F = −yi + xj + 0k has zero curl and interpret the
result in terms of potential flow.
9. For F = yzi + xzj + xyk, determine if F is irrotational by calculating
∇ × F.
10. Let F = (xz)i − (yz)j + (xy)k. Compute the curl ∇ × F and discuss
whether F can be expressed as the gradient of some scalar function.

2 Questions from Vector Fields and Line Inte-

grals: Work, Circulation, and Flux
1. For the vector field F = (2xy, x2 − y 2 ), compute the work done by F along
the path C from (1, 0) to (0, 1) on the curve y = 1 − x2 .

3. Show that the line integral C F · dr of F = (y 2 , −x2 ) is path-independent
R

and evaluate the integral from (0, 0) to (2, 2).

3 Questions from Green’s Theorem in the Plane

1. Use Green’s Theorem to evaluate C (2x3 − y 2 ) dx + (x2 + 4y) dy, where C
H

is the square with vertices at (0, 0), (1, 0), (1, 1), (0, 1), traversed counter-
clockwise.
2. Let C be the triangle
H with vertices (0, 0), (2, 0), (2, 2). Apply Green’s The-
orem to calculate C (−y dx + x dy).
3. For the vector field F = (x2 − y 2 , 2xy), show that C F · dr = 0 for any
H

closed path C enclosing the origin by using Green’s Theorem.

Theorem.

4 Questions from Surfaces for Surface Integrals

RR
1. Evaluate the surface integral S F · dS for F = (x, y, z) over the surface
S of the paraboloid z = 4 − x2 − y 2 above the xy-plane.

2. Compute the flux of the vector field F = (y, z, x) through the surface of
the cylinder x2 + y 2 = 1, bounded by z = 0 and z = 3.
3. Findpthe surface integral of F = (2x, −y, z) over the surface of the cone
z = x2 + y 2 , 0 ≤ z ≤ 1.
4. For F = (x2 , y 2 , z 2 ), calculate S F · dS over the surface S of the sphere
