The Rookie Time of Death,: Cultural Work Discussion
For this discussion, I chose a TV episode which is from the show The Rookie, Season 1 Episode 8. In the
episode, titled Time of Death, a newly appointed police officer John Nolan experiences a shooting
incident that results in the death of a criminal perpetrator. This was the first time Officer Nolan shot and
killed anyone in the line of duty. The episode goes into detail about what goes through the mind of an
inexperienced police officer as is temporarily removed from duty and investigated for his part in the
lethal shooting.
The episode says a lot about police procedures and cultures in the world of criminal justice. One of the
main messages is that police officers do not take deaths lightly and that it affects their personal and
professional lives. They are investigated for any wrongdoings and have to prove that the fatal shooting
was warranted. The episode is heavily focused on mental health of a police officer involved in such an
incident by touching on factors such as their reactions, doubts, actions while under scrutiny and
temporary isolation from their peers. The episode generally communicates the message that police
officers are human beings first, and that they are also affected by the drastic changes in the experiences
of people every day. As officers of the law, it is inevitable for officers on active duty to encounter such
unsavory situation in pursuit of peace and justice.
This episode helped me to question some of my assumptions and beliefs about the danger that police
officers expose themselves to. I previously thought that officers on active duty are unfeeling, unfazed by
death and can easily shake off bad experiences. Learning that it affected them in such a profound way,
especially in a professional sense. I am still skeptical about this depiction as I suspect that the plot was
embellished in some ways to make it more entertaining as a form of media.
