SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MUSIC

Grade Level: 5
Subject: MUSIC
Duration: 60 minutes

I. LESSON OBJECTIVES:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

a. Cognitive: Identify and describe different musical instruments


and their functions in various musical genres.
b. Psychomotor: Demonstrate how to play at least two different
musical instruments (e.g., percussion and melodic instruments).
c. Affective: Appreciate the role of musical instruments in cultural
expression and demonstrate respect for diverse musical
traditions.

II. CONTENT:

a. Topic: Musical Instruments – Functions and Uses


b. Materials :
 Musical instruments (if possible) or pictures/sound
recordings
 Worksheets for group research
 Art supplies for the closing activity
c. Learning resources: Music in 5th grade

III. PROCEDURE:

a. Preliminary activity
1. Prayer

b. Review
 Start with a brief recap of the previous lesson where
students learned the elements of music: rhythm, melody,
and harmony.
 Ask questions such as:
 What are the parts of a song?
 Can anyone name a song they like and identify its
elements?
 Encourage participation by having students share their
answers and thoughts.
c. Motivation
 Show a short video clip featuring a variety of musical
performances (or play a lively piece of music).
 Ask students questions to provoke excitement and curiosity:
 What instruments do you see?
 How do they think these instruments contribute to the music?
 Explain that today they will learn more about these
instruments, how they are played, and why they are
important.

d. Discussion
Activity 1 (Exploration): (15 minutes)

 Display various musical instruments (real, images, or audio


clips). Instruments to include: piano, guitar, drums, flute,
violin, and traditional instruments from different cultures.
 Divide the class into small groups; each group will study a
specific instrument and prepare to present its function and
use.
 Provide worksheets to guide their exploration: students will
note down what they find about the instrument’s sound,
how it is played, and what genre of music it is used in.
Activity 2 (Demonstration): (15 minutes)

 Have the groups present their findings to the class. Each


group can play a snippet of a song featuring their
instrument if available.
 Facilitate the demonstrations of how to play the
instruments. Invite students to come up and try out simple
techniques (e.g., a few notes on a keyboard or a beat on a
drum).

Analysis (5 minutes)
 After the demonstrations, discuss the different groups’
presentations.
 Ask students:
 What similarities and differences did they notice between
the instruments?
 How do they think each instrument affects the sound of a
musical piece?

Abstraction (5 minutes)
 Guide students in abstracting what they learned:
 Discuss how each instrument contributes to the overall feel
of the music.
 Talk about cultural significance: How do different cultures
use instruments?
 Emphasize the idea that all instruments tell a story and
evoke feelings.

IV. Assessment and Application:

 Help students apply their knowledge by asking them to think


of a song they enjoy.
 Lead them to identify which instruments may be featured in
that song.
 Close with a group activity where students can illustrate their
favorite instrument and write a sentence about its function
and cultural significance.

V. ASSIGNMENT :
 Ask students to write a one new thing they discovered about
musical instruments.
